On This Day In (Racing) History

Thought we'd start one of these reminiscence threads and see who remembers what as they crop up. So first one is...........

On this day in 1989, Desert Orchid gave 18lb and a beating to Mackeson Gold Cup winner Pegwell Bay in the Gainsborough Chase at Sandown.

1862 Ace Of Hearts and The Rug dead heated in a 4 mile chase at Carmarthen; they re ran the race, and the horses dead heated again!

I was a student in 1989 and took overnight ferry and train Dublin Hollyhead London to gat to Sandown for that race and thought it all for nought when Dessie was a no show in parade ring: he had to be reshod. What a day it was. Thanks for reminding me DG

That Gainsborough was marvellous - what a shame the race is a shadow of what it once was . Poor old Pegwell Bay fastest away from the last and then just mowed down close home.

The Beatles landed in the USA for the very first time at Kennedy Airport on this day 1964 which has got nothing to do with racing

2 years later on this day Mark Johnson was born which has probably even less to do with racing going by his commentary skills

Pluralism of Ideas and the prosperity of any land are intertwined. Freedom of minds and skill of intellect to 'think the unthinkable' is how humanity has progressed; when minds are incarcerated nothing endures.
