Is Ollie Magern in danger of becoming the forgotten horse in the Gold Cup picture? After his disappointing effort in the Betfair Chase on ground he hated, he's about 20's with most firms, even though he beat the Gold Cup 2nd fav in the Charlie Hall, giving him 5Ib's, as well as beating the third fav Trabolgan in the Feltham, on an unsuitable track. I do worry about whether he likes being taken on for the lead, but at the price, he looks a value call to me.

I dont see this horse a Gold Cup winner by any means.

    I think it is simple:
Kicking King,Trabolgan,Kingscliff or Beef Or Salmon are better than him and I would also prefer Celestial Gold rather than Ollie Magern.

I think OM is interesting for the King George.

I agree with you, JduCF - 20/1 is a big price in my eyes. I think you can discount his run at Haydock - he wasn't suited by the tacky ground or the omission of many of the fences. On genuine good ground it will be a different story. I also agree with you that my one big worry is whenter he needs to be able to dominate in his races to win.

He was also entitled to bounce. To base his chance of running well in March on his last run is plain ridiculous. I doubt he will be quite good enough to win but 20/1 is by no means a true reflection of his chances, and he offers some e/w value in a market which is too tight at the top.

Agreed. I think his run last time was too bad to be true and he will be seen in a far better light at Sandown on Boxing Day.

Ollie Mag cannot win a G1 chase if any of Suny's gang of four turn up fit and well. And I don't want to hear any more about it.!

Fair enough AC - I'm sure you're well aware though that you'll never hear the end of it when Ollie wins another Grade One chase....... B)

I like Ollie Magern a hell of a lot, but I see his best chance of winning a G1 open age chase is if he either dominates out in front or as a flat track bully.

He's worth a punt ew in the Gold Cup at 20's+ owing to the ground at Haydock. Just don't see the point about a lot of fences being missed out. Four in total were missed out I believe (of 18), leaving a maximum of a 4 furlong run to the next fence (3 out second time around). The ground was tacky that day and I can see him sneaking into a place at Cheltenham, though probably behing one of the front two and another.

Didn't look to have the build of a bully when racing alongside Kingscliff at Haydock.

I like Ollie Magern and it's a bit unfair to be writing him off on the basis of his most recent performance, as it is nothing to do with deterioration in the horse.

He does need things to go his way though.

Kingscliff looks the most plausible Gold Cup candidate to me this time round.

Tremendous scenes today as Ollie Magern finally proved Shadow Leader right by winning The Gold Cup (albeit the Perth version).

It was a shame my enjoyment of the race was interupted by some poxy Flat dross in Ireland but I was almost in tears as the old boy battled bravely to hold on today.

    Roll on Wetherby in October.

I just posted up about him on another forum - snap! Lovely effort - I managed to watch most of the race, although I'm so off NH at present, and was delighted to see the old sausage looking as tidy as ever. It's something when a 12 y.o. holds his interest in the lark for so long, not just getting round safely, but remaining competitive enough to win. Brilliant.

Thrilled for Ollie and connections. They never lost faith in him, he loves being in racing and hates being in a paddock and he so deserved to win again. Adore him and all credit to team Twiston-Davies for keeping him sound (he has zillions of problems) and happy.
