I know the french are not reknowned for their music but two of the best songs I have ever heard happen to be by Jaques Brel . Amsterdam and Ne Me Quite Pas. I'm sure we all could nominate our favourites

No contest - all together now:

"Des yeux qui font baisser les miens
Un rire qui se perd sur sa bouche
    Voilà le portrait sans retouche
    De l'homme auquel j'appartiens

    Refrain
Quand il me prend dans ses bras,
    Il me parle tout bas
Je vois la vie en rose,
Il me dit des mots d'amour
Des mots de tous les jours,
Et ça me fait quelque chose
Il est entré dans mon coeur,
    Une part de bonheur
    Dont je connais la cause,
    C'est lui pour moi,
Moi pour lui dans la vie
Il me l'a dit, l'a juré
    Pour la vie.
    Et dès que je l'aperçois
    Alors je sens en moi
    Mon coeur qui bat.

Des nuits d'amour à plus finir
Un grand bonheur qui prend sa place
    Des ennuis, des chagrins s'effacent
    Heureux, heureux à en mourir

    Refrain

for me it has to be Je'taime by Serge Gainsbourg, I have no idea what the song is about but I love it !

    - Je t’aime je t’aime
    Oh oui je t’aime
    - Moi non plus
    - Oh mon amour
    - Comme la vague irrésolue
Je vais, je vais et je viens
    Entre tes reins
    Je vais et je viens
    Entre tes reins
    Et je me retiens

    - Je t’aime je t’aime
    Oh oui je t’aime
    - Moi non plus
    - Oh mon amour
Tu es la vague, moi l’île nue
Tu vas, tu vas et tu viens
    Entre mes reins
    Tu vas et tu viens
    Entre mes reins
    Et je te rejoins

    - Je t’aime je t’aime
    Oh oui je t’aime
    - Moi non plus
    - Oh mon amour
    - L’amour physique est sans issue

Je vais je vais et je viens
    Entre tes reins
    Je vais et je viens
    Je me retiens
    - Non ! maintenant viens...
I can resist everything except temptation.

Eyes which cause a drop in mine
A laughter which is lost on its mouth
Here is the portrait without final improvement
Of the man to which I belong

    Refrain
When it takes to me in its arms,
    It speaks to me low
    I see the life pink,
It tells me words of love
    Words of tous.les.jours,
And that does something to me
    It entered my heart,
    A share of happiness
    Whose I know the cause,
    It is him for me,
Me for him in the life
It said it to me, swore
    For the life.
And as soon as I see it
    Then I feel in me
    My heart which beats.

Nights of love to finishing more
A great happiness which takes its place
    Troubles, sorrows are erased
Happy, happy to die about it

I I love you love you
    Oh yes I love you
    - Me either
    - Oh my love
    - Like the irresolute wave
    I go, I go and I come
    Between your loins
    I go and I come
    Between your loins
    And I retain myself

    - I love you I love you
    Oh yes I love you
    - Me either
    - Oh my love
You are the wave, me the naked island
You go, you go and you come
    Between my LOINS
    You go and you come
    Between my kidneys
    And I join you

    - I love you I love you
    Oh yes I love you
    - Me either
    - Oh my love
    - the physical love is without exit

    I go I go and I come
    Between your loins
    I go and I come
    I retain myself
    - Not! now come...

Merlin! I'd stop using that translation service if I were you!

Not only did it manage to feck up one of the greatest romantic songs ever - La Vie En Rose - but it managed to have Serge Gainsbourg coming between Jane Birkin's kidneys! :shy: h

Dara, at least you know now what the song was about....

(Reins certainly does mean kidneys, but it also translates as loins)

Merlin, the songs translate well, it's just that they have been mistranslated.

Sol, you've just said that you love the band of cut grass left by a mower (swathe). Now you may well do so , but you might also love le langage....

So much for French A level but I always had a thing for Jaques Brel . Shame he died so young . He was a completely original talent .

To the best of my knowledge there have been two lots of English words set to Piaf's La Vie En Rose. The first is by Mack David:

Hold me close and hold me fast
    The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
    I'm in a world apart
    A world where roses bloom
    And when you speak
    Angels sing from above
    Every day words
Seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
    And life will always be
    La vie en rose

The second, I think, was by Gracie Fields:

Take me to your heart again
    Let’s make a start again
    Forgiving and forgetting
Take me to your heart again
    And leave behind from then
    Our life of long regretting
Dearest, let’s turn back the years
    Let smiles come after tears
    Like sunshine after rain
I’m yearning for you by night and by day
Praying I’ll soon hear you saying “I love you”
    Then, we’ll never part again
If you will take me to your heart again

David's words were fairly close to the original, while Our Gracie just knew (and wanted to sing) a good tune when she heard it.

There was a time when I thought that Brel was one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived - I still like his stuff but I've dropped his rating a little.

Did you know that he wasn't French, but Belgian?

European is a big enough word as far as music goes . Brian , I know he was Belgian but it's bad enough saying you're into a French artist without being lambasted :P

That very good singer Scott Walker did a fine version of the Brel song 'Jackie' in 1968. Not sure if the English version was by Brel or someone else.

Yes Brian, Brel and Herge (sorry about the lack of acute accent) are bankers in 5 famous Belgians quiz. :P

sol - by 'international' I presume you mean originally not in English? Lots of contenders were translated. I'd probably opt for 'La Mer' (Charles Trenet).
The older I get the better I was.
