Mr Hoon, Mr Blair and Mr Straw insist that there is a military need for 600 more British troops to be deployed in Iraq to help the US forces. Opposition parties claim that it is a political rather than a military decision as Dubya has come under a bit of fire in these days of lead-up to the election about how much support there is for the coalition.

    Here are a few facts:

Approximate totals of US forces (excluding the National Guard):

    Army - 490,000
    Marines - 175,000
    Navy - 380,00
    Air Force - 375,000
    Reservists - 160,000

Currently some 140,000 to 150,000 members of the US army are deployed in Iraq.

I'll leave it to you to decide how essential militarily the 600 extra British forces are.

    Brian,
i have it on good authority that there are rumblings of discontent among the troops.

According to some, the decision was taken a couple of weeks ago.

The fact that recce parties are up there looking for locations suggests that they may be right.

Our political leader is adamant that no decision has been taken.

    It is not the number
It is about implication and the meaning of being an allied.

When we leave from there like cowards it was a political problem, not the number of people leaving there.

I agree that it is not the number and that it is about being allies supporting the USA. But Tony Blair and his ministers are saying that it is a military decision - which it patently isn't!

Ho yes agree he blair said that they will be home by xmas, so what a better butter up/moral booster, than to be told that..... if as we all know they will be going into more aggressive action than they normally are involved in ....... its become more of a dictatorship by the day its time the guy was ousted and get democracy back on the table...........
