Im thinking of getting a new laptop.

I will be getting broadband and will use is mainly for the net. I cannot stand slow/shitty computers and dont have a clue what to do when they go wrong so i reckon i should buy one brand new.

I dont understand all this spec stuff though! What mb ghz etc etc do i need to be looking at to get a decent, yet affordable laptop?

Anyone know of any decent offers on anywere at the minute? ive looked on eBay but dont trust that **** hole after some low life tosser scammed me last time!

Also, what broadband connection should i choose? Ive head theres some pretty dodgy ones out there that run hardly any faster than dial up.

    Ta very much, Carl

I have a Panasonic CF -T1 Toughbook . The benefit of this wonderful machine is that although it may not have as much memory or be as fast as some others it only weighs 2lb !!!- though it is much faster than my old Dell and quite quick enough for me

    It is a marvel

And I need two (daughters Chrissy prezzies).

Can recommend Biscit for your broad-band connection.

I bought a laptop from a company called Rock Direct two weeks ago and i haven't destroyed it yet ! It did take me a year to decide which one to buy though...

That little beauty (or any of that range will do&#33 is the sole item on the Christmas list I've given my Dad..... Mind you it does help that he works for Panasonic

Carl, work out your budget, and then decide what you actually need the laptop to do. There are some all singing all dancing ones around for £1200 plus, and some as cheap as £600! Remember, alot of stores are putting their prices up as Xmas will be upon us before you know it so nmow be a good time to get one!!! There are also some great magazines around that can help, and on line stores such. as Novatech that offer some great deals. Even PC World were offering a good deal on laptops a few weeks ago. I wouldn't touch Ebay for electrical stuff, go to a reputable company that will offer support and warranties.

Remember, work out your realistic budget, and then decide what you want the laptop to be able to do and how big a screen you want etc. There is little point paying out £1400 for a laptop if you just want to send e-mails and surf the net twice a week.

    Happy Hunting!

Considering your topic of a few weeks ago, do you really need one, or just feel that you do?

If there is reincarnation I hope to return as Colin Phillip's daughter.

How reliable are laptops compared to desktops?

I'm always hearing horror stories about them crashing, etc.

I've trialled the odd one but I don't think I'll ever get used to the keyboard. I suppose if I ever needed one I'd get used to it but I can't see how to avoid long-term shoulder and arm pains.

I don't hunch. I have it on a table level with where a desktop would be. I just find a laptop so much easier for work as I can transport it to school.

I was having a wee joke, Paul.

Out of curiosity, though, why take it to school at all? Is your school poorly resourced?

Maurice, I actually use my laptop more than my PC. Touch wood, no problems at all with my Sony lap top in the year I have had it. We have actually got it wireless networked, so I can pick up the broadband connection and sit in front of the telly at the same time! How sad is that?
