    tech stuff again

    Calling the knowledgable among you...

Following a trip to Aberdeen the other day with my laptop for using on the bus, etc, (my mobile is ancient and not up to much) I noticed once I got back that everything was very slow.

I presume it was because I had to accept the various Ts & Cs of the wifi access points in the various locations so decided to clear my cache in order to speed things up, and that's worked up toa point.

I'm now finding I'm having to log in every time I visit any site, including this one (even though I'm ticking the 'remember me' box).

Can anyone advise what settings I have to change to get things back to how they were, ie the laptop speed was fine and I didn't need to log in every time I revisited a site for which I'd already logged in?

    Thanks in advance.

    Edge

(It came loaded with the laptop. The guy in the computer shop recommended it.)

You may have done this already, and it may be something a little more complicated, but...

    Open Edge
Click on 3 dots top right
Scroll down a bit, click on 'settings' near the bottom
On the left click on 'cookie and site permissions'
Click on 'manage and delete cookies and site data'
Make sure the checkbox is blue on 'Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended)'

Thanks, chaumi. I hadn't done it already but when I went there the checkbox was already blue.

I tried a couple of system restores. The first one didn't complete (can't recall the reason) so I went back one point further. It did complete successfully but hasn't solved the issues.

Looks like I've managed to sort it, at least for now.

I’m not over keen on Edge to be honest, it seems to do what it thinks you want rather than what you really want.
I only changed to it because Google Chrome kept crashing and I couldn’t find out why.

I found a setting hidden in the dark dungeons that deletes all cookies on “exit”. This must have been turned during a recent update to Edge, I certainly didn’t do it.
I’ll try to explain where it is later when I’m on the laptop.

Anyone else with talktalk and totally exasperated by their customer service ( or lack of it). Currently without catchup tv and was without tv altogether till I put the old tv box back in ( they’d sent me a new one saying that was the problem). I am planning to switch to BT but am putting it off as I’m so dependent on the internet these days ( which is thankfully still working). I really do feel like murdering someone. There’s something about having a problem and being technically inept but knowing that someone else could fix it in 5 minutes that does my head in!

I was with talktalk for about a year some time back. They were awful. I couldn't wait to switch away from them.

The problem I have with tech people is their assumption that I will know what they're talking about. If I knew what they were talking about I'd probably be able to resolve most of my issues myself.

I'm not sure BT will be any better, moe. I think they have a poor reputation all round. I'll check what Which? say.

Hope this copies & pastes ok:

Mike is with BT and they’ve been great. Even in the worst weather they’ve come out to his house to sort out any problems. I’m dog sitting at my daughters at the moment but have come home to try again. I’ve carried the computer downstairs with the router so it can be nearer to the tv in case that was the problem. Why is my iPad still working though. Is it because it’s the same as a mobile phone? I’ve disconnected so many things I’m not sure if I know how to connect them all back up again. And it’s bloomin’ hot. I hate not being able to fix something!

    I've found something else that's a possibility

    3 dots top right
    Settings near the bottom
Select Privacy, search and services (2nd one down)
Scroll down a bit to Clear browsing data
Select Choose what to clear every time you close the browser
Make sure nothing is blue (in particular Cookies and other site data

Note : it's possible that you have to close the browser down and reopen it fresh after making these types of changes to ensure the change stays applied.

If that doesn't work, I don't see anything else obvious. Personally, I'd just download Chrome and use that as preferred browser instead (but recognise some don't like Google)

I think that's what I did as far as making sure nothing is blue. I left the first two blue so I think unchecking the third item on the list is what solved it for me.

Sorry late to the party, is this in general or in relation to the speed and response of the Talking Horses site and forum?
