Last Friday at Newbury - Pic D'Orhy (novice chasing)
I had a sizeable bet on this one so was very interested in the race. The one thing that struck me was the strong early pace. This was strictly no messing. In fact, it reminded me of the 3m novice chase at Newbury in which Native River beat Un Temps Pour Tout (a race I'm wont to mention).
The game plan was clearly to make it a proper race and he had some good horses stone cold leaving the cross fence. My thought as he turned for home included an expletive to accompany a question of how far he was going to win. Seconds later, I'm shouting, "Cobden, no!!!" as even to my amateur eye he was not meeting the fence right.
Of course, the horse got too close at that pace and had no chance of recovering.
I can't help thinking he was going to put up the top novice performance of the season to date, possibly pushing 170 although it's possible he could have gone well clear and eased down a lot, or maybe just run out of steam, who knows?
The worry is that he now doesn't have a good completion rate but he does, to me, have one hell of an engine.
Hopefully they'll find an easy confidence booster next time before taking on the G2s and G1s. Alternatively, they might put him by and plot him up for the big handicaps next season ahead of targeting the better races at Cheltenham.
Whether he is one to back next time is a moot point but he is most certainly one to note.

CONSTITUTION HILL
Sandown 4 December
Andy Stewart - Sandown Park's Great Friend "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race)
2m, Class 3, £7,804.50
Going: Good To Soft
Not very original this one, but it was an impressive performance.
Before the race Nikky Henderson said “He cost £120,000 at Doncaster in May having finished second in a Point to Point which has subsequently worked out to be a pretty smart race. He’s a fine looking person who stamps a lot of class and has done everything we’ve asked of him. Sandown Novices are always very good but so is Constitution Hill.”
And so it proved, Constitution Hill left some decent rivals gasping as he powered away from them after the last. There’s not much more I can say - he looked pretty special.
Afterwards NH said “CONSTITUTION HILL is the most extraordinary creature I've come across in years. He will go back to his stable and go to sleep now. I hope he's high class and he's definitely a chaser for the future.”
ps: can you really imagine a Class 3 race being worth only £7800 in this day and age? Blimey!!

Ladbroke trophy.
I thought ONTHEROPES was an eyecatcher throughout the race and seemed to get outpaced and then ran on well.
After I put this up on the Ladbroke thread as an eyecatcher I had a little on for the grand national at 100/1 with bet 365 and now hes 33/1 with them.
90% of the horses I put up on this forum are horses that are in my alerts.

Personally think Demachine was more tracker worthy than Ontheropes and he's in a nice race next Saturday at Ascot. Remastered is also entered but I'd be wary of that horse given his fate at Newbury.

SARATOGA LASS(ire) finished 6th in a bumper and was ridden by John Riddington who didnt look as if he wanted to to break into a sweat.
Could have to wait a while but I'm used to being patient.im sure it can run better with a better jockey.

FERN HILL
Uttoxeter. 7 December
Grehan Consulting Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
2m4f, Class 3, £5,881.68
Going: Soft
This was a fine run from Fern Hill who had not been out for almost a year. In this, his first chase, he raced at the head of things with his jumping looking particularly sound and the best on show. He fell a couple of lengths behind the winner after the last, but had pegged this back to a neck at the post.
Ran off 137 here and at 18/1 was the outsider of the party - I doubt he’ll be so again.
Post #7 Brorson runs again tomorrow 15:30 Lingfield, early price 4/1. Down in class, up in trip a bit.

Desert Orchid (9th December 2021)
The drift out to 8/1 told the story. Actually ran passably well until the third-last where he was running fifth after which he weakened extremely quickly and was pulled up. Won’t stay with him unless he enjoys significant market support.
As an aside, the take out horse from the race was Kyntara who undoubtedly would have won had he not made a hash of the last hurdle.

Kyntara is a tracker horse of mine, and I'd be slightly wary, barjon.
He probably would have won today but for making an arse of the last, but I don't think we'll see him to full effect until he is upped steeply in trip and sent over fences. He looks a relentless galloper to my eyes, and I think he'll probably remain vulnerable over hurdles, as he just looks too big and scopey to jump them properly/quickly.

Desert Orchid (13th December 2021)
Post #8 Be the Difference runs again tomorrow 12:10 Ffos Las, early price 8/13. Has won twice since post at skinny prices. Odds on last time so let it go and looks like same again tomorrow (and he’s up another 11lbs).
3rd- drifted to 11/10, that’s enough for the time being I think.
