This was my main bet in the race so I watching it very closely.

My expectation levels were dampened as they jumped off. I was hoping that, with plenty of 2-mile pace in his form, he'd be ridden prominently, something at which jockey Deutsch is very adept, but, alas, he was anchored early. He was in the final three for most of the first circuit and made very gradual ground as they moved out into the country, seemingly travelling very comfortably. When they got to the top of the hill my hopes were starting to rise as he made ground despite a slight error five out. My hopes rose further as he got closer going to out and at this point I was thinking maybe Deutsch had known all along he had the horsepower beneath him but, a shake of the rein and a pathetic wave of the whip in thin air later, he was starting to ease off.

Right now I have no idea if he was being ridden for stamina which, ultimately, he doesn't have, or if he wasn't fit and was looked after accordingly but, either way, I imagine sooner or later we will see what this horse is capable of.
Grand Annual must be the target.

    Destinée Royale

    Cheltenham Jan 01
    3m2f handicap chase

This was the first of three V Williams horses I backed at the meeting but I missed the race and only just saw the replay. I had heard the trainer refer briefly to the mare's mishap when she was discussing her winner of the following race, L'Homme Pressé, but that was all.

I have to say, I think Destinée Royale would have won. At five out, she had gone a stride clear from the fence before inexplicably tripping herself up. Until then she had been very efficient over her fences bar one of the open ditches, which she reached for both times.

At the time her her fall, she was going better than anything else in the race and looked to me like she was going to stay in front. The eventual winner, Full Back, which I had top-rated but had decided not to back on Thursday evening when it was 14/1 (SP 9/2!), was being scrubbed along to stay with the mare at that point but doggedly withstood all challenges.

I'm not in the least bit convinced he would have got past her.

Full Back will go up maybe 5lbs for the win so I reckon Destinée Royale will be at least that much well in when she next appears in a handicap. She might need to go up a little if they are looking at the Ultima at the Festival and maybe the plan was to take the hit from winning yesterday to ensure she makes the cut so there has to be a chance they will want her to come out and win before the weights come out. Currently off 130, she will qualify for modest Class 3 races and could easily pick one up without having a hard race.

Definitely one to keep an eye out for.

I did a tricast of Alnadam, Galahad Quest and Simply The Betts in the big handicap chase, DO, and was starting to count the winnings on the run to three-out.

It's an even longer way home from 5-out, and implying a horse would have won from there is surely not much more than guess-work. An awful lot can change in the straight, never mind as they roll down the hill.

That said, I did my absolute brains yesterday, so what do I know?

I would largely agree, GH, but sometimes your gut tells you different.

I myself was strongly questioning whether Remastered would have won the Hennessy yet was convinced Pic D'Orhy would have won the day before. PDO won next time while Remastered subsequently weakened late on in the shorter Tommy Whittle.

Maybe the euphoria of being right twice recently is clouding my judgment

Still, I'll be willing to back my judgment with cash (prices permitting) on DR going forward.

Timeform have also picked out Destinee Royale as one to watch

Destinee Royale was in the process of running well on her first start since last March when unlucky to fall on her return at Cheltenham. She travelled well in front for much of the contest and looked all set to play a part in the finish when coming down shortly after jumping the fifth-last fence in a race that was eventually won by one of the joint-favourites Full Back.
Although Destinee Royale has just turned nine, she hasn’t had much racing and was making just her sixth start over fences here. Both her chase wins have come on heavy ground, with her latest success coming at Wetherby last season before she signed off with a narrow defeat to Chef d’Oeuvre over three and a half miles at Haydock.
As long as she’s none the worse for her tumble, Destinee Royale looks capable of gaining compensation in another staying handicap in the weeks to come.

Reminds me of the punchline to an old joke, the one about the guy buying Tampax for his wife.

Salesman - Can I interest you in a lawnmower?

Customer - I just came in for Tampax, why would I want a lawnmower?

Salesman - Your weekend's fvcked. Might as well cut the grass.

Timeform have just fvcked up any chance of getting a price about DR!

Post #8 Be the Difference runs tomorrow 3:0 Catterick, early price 11/4 - has run WW3 since post and is up 19lbs from post and 11lbs since last win.

Ps: I said after his last run that he’d done enough for now so I think he might struggle again.

    3rd confirms finished for now

Another son of Walk in The Park, Walking On Air hasn't been seen out since running second in a Kempton Bumper.

He looked as green as grass that day but there was still a lot to like about the way he travelled before weakening.

Nicky has wrpped him up in cotton wool since

He's only just turned 5 and no doubt his future is over fences but he sould be seen soon in a couple Novice Hurdles before the end of the season

I have him earmarked as one to follow.

Maybe the wrong thread but the blinkers go back on Shannon Bridge today (2.47 Wetherby). I know a few on here backed him last time and a comment was made on Racing TV that he’d need headgear to show up better. He’s only 4/1 though so no chances are being taken by the books

Only looked at this card to see what price Haafapiece was and got suckered into backing Shannon Bridge when I saw the b next to his name. One that got away

Two caught my eye in the lanzarote. Actually 3
UP FOR PAROL travelled well put didnt seem to see out the distance.
The other two were the evan William's pair.
Of course I've already forgot their names.edit later.
Considering how the race was run I thought the one ridden by is daughter ran a cracker for a 9 yr old from the position it was in.
The Bowen one was running well but didnt appear to last home..

    DANS LE VENT
    BOLD PLAN

it would be interesting if they tried to qualify for the pertemps with Dan's le gent.
