    Stephen Mahon

Can someone from the Emerald Isle tell me how this lowlife is actually allowed to be considered to go anywhere near a racehorse again after this? FOUR years? Are the IHRB totally spineless or am I missing something? This is not his first offence - a previous horse in his care actually chewed her own legs because she had been neglected that much!

Yes, not only that but “ Mahon is not prevented from earning a livelihood from the industry for the duration of his suspension.”. Can never understand that in cases of this sort, as you say, you'd have thought he would be banned from ever getting near a horse.

The man is an utter disgrace and should never be allowed near a horse again in his life.

4 months back in 2008? For that? Unbelievable.

Sorry to add another post but I've been thinking about this during the carrot shop and what kind of owner would leave a horse with him after the 2008 incident, never mind anything else? That poor horse. How on earth did no one in the yard call for help for her?

From Kevin Blake's twitter. Have to wonder shame he can't be prosecuted in law as well.

I have just read that in its entirety and have to agree. I would hope that this would not happen over here. In my opinion he should be banned for life. And from keeping all animals.

He is appealing the decision apparently.

If he's appealing the decision, could that leave him exposed to harsher penalties?

I also wonder if there is any merit to petitioning the relevant bodies over this case. The outrage is clearly unanimous at this moment in time. However, I fear that if there is not a sustained call for accountability in matters such as this, then this case will simply blow over, and others like it will continue to emerge again and again in the future.

I think the old saying that a picture paints a thousand words is partly, I believe, why there was such widespread outrage at the GE incident. It was printed in Daily papers in the UK so reached a much wider audience than it would have if just in the racing publications. Plus the O'Leary connections. Perhaps the reaction feels more restrained and I'm not saying they should have published/included pictures with the report, but perhaps because there are no images to go with this report ( I wouldn't want to see them either personally) but perhaps a picture of a horse eating itself published back in 2008, or even now actually, would generate a wider level of outrage, never mind the more recent victims.
I believe he should never be able to be near any animals again, never mind be paid for it.
I'd be happy to put my name on a petition for a life ban at the very least.
A mention to ITV racing for the weekend might be a start.
