York 2.10 - I've had a pop at Divine Light at 18/1. The ratings, on the face of it, are basically those of Class 2/3 handicappers but most of these will probably prove much better than that and there isn’t really any way of knowing which will improve the most. There was a clamour for Snow Lantern (13/8) to be supplemented for the Guineas so she’s an obvious market leader. Divine Light's reappearance was in the Nell Gwynn, a G3, for which she was only 13/2, only a half-point longer than the winner Sacred who went on to run well in the Guineas. Saffron Beach was runner-up in both races. Nothing went right for her that day and this is a drop in class . The first-time hood might help a lot and she might just be over-priced.
I thought about backing her in the market without Snow Lantern but they were only going two places.

Thanks, guys - just love York races.
Well done, Reet.
Your a classic example of a man who enjoys winning on the flat, and I bet you'd rather take that, than spending all winter backing odds on jolly's anti post in champion chases that end up getting turned over.
What a shrewdie you are.
A nice person as well.

Thanks, Marb; you are too kind.
Happy for you, Reet.
Ps, I was referring to myself in the above post.
I remember once thinking the jumps was the right medium to bet on, but I'm increasingly think its the other way around.
The flat can be tough though if a losing run creeps in, I find.
Good luck tomorrow all.

That doesn't surprise me, Outsider.
You are true to your name on the flat, you've picked a good few outsiders and winners over the years. I think you have a good following.
I don’t bet to win. I just have an account so that I can back steamers, tips from people on forums or racing radio, sometimes from races I’ve studied. All I aim to do is break even. But during lockdown I used up all the money in my account (which isn’t much), which has never happened before. I’ve since realised that it only seems to work with flat racing. And I hate to admit that even to myself.
There's a reason for that. All else being equal there is a greater incidence of the unexpected hazard over the jumps (falls, unseatings etc) than there is on the flat (interference etc ). Adds up over time. It's more fun over the jumps though and your old friends last longer.
Jump racing's a spectacle and,as such, best watched.
Flat racing is - by definition - less of a gamble.
You pays your money, and you takes your choice.
Since 2014 when I left the railway and realised I needed to knuckle down on the betting my ROI has been around 2 percentage points bigger on the jumps. I put this down to name recognition and York only having flat racing thank God.
I much prefer the jumps and tend to do very well at the big festival meetings and in the better Saturday races but I'm definitely much more consistent on the Flat, especially in the first half of the season.
I reckon by the time we get into August few horses have much to hide from the handicapper and it tends to end up more down to luck in running and/or jockeyship than form. That's when I tend to gravitate towards lightly-raced 3yos taking on their elders in handicaps.

August usually very tough for me. in fact apart from Goodwood I do bad post July meeting until around Ayr Gold Cup day. Stakes will be dropped this year, might just look for place lays even. Especially at the Ebor meeting
