    2021 2yos including Colin's First Season Sires

It’s not time to come out of hibernation just yet, but the 2021 flat turf season is only about 8 weeks away and a market is already available for the First Season Sires competition. Below are some early prices with the number of mares covered (as reported in the 2019 edition of Return of Mares).

    9/4 Profitable 175 mares covered
5/2 Cotai Glory 171 mares covered
    11/4 Caravaggio 193 mares covered
9/2 El Kabeir 146 mares covered
    8/1 Ribchester 142 mares covered
14/1 Highland Reel 161 mares covered
    14/1 Aclaim 146 mares covered
20/1 Galileo Gold 132 mares covered

As I’ve said before the RoM figures can be confusing as just because a sire covered a lot of mares doesn’t mean there will be a lot of 2yos representing that sire: however it is a good indication. Once we have some figures of actual 2yos they’ll be listed.

There are number of big number FSS’s not included in this betting market and perhaps the biggest surprise is Churchill (190). However there is also Ardad (126), Time Test (103) and Ullysees (110). There are other FSS whose produce will be of interest such as Almanzor and Decorated Knight.

Last years champion Mehmas was a record breaker. He only ran as a 2yo and though that can’t be an indicator it does seem important for a likely champion to have been a good 2yo. Of course Mehmas was also the FSS who had the most 2yos running for him. Given that I can understand Profitable being favourite but he wasn’t a really good 2yo.

All these FSS have to have their produce running against the most consistent supplier of 2yo winners and that is Kodiac (228 mares). He is now joined by Mehmas’s 2nd crop (166) so with these two big hitters pickings may be slim for some of this years FSS.

If anyone has any other betting lists or data on actual foals (now 2yos) on the ground please add that information.

    FIRST SEASON SIRES OF 2021

    15 February 2021|Bloodstock
    By Luke O'Neill
Tally-Ho Stud's Mehmas has made a sensational start at stud, as his first crop excelled on the track last year. Tally-Ho will be hopeful that Cotai Glory and Galileo Gold can also make a successful start to life at stud this season. An exciting group of stallions will have their first runners in 2021. The main first season sires in the UK and Ireland are profiled in this article.
*2018 fee - reference to what this year’s 2-year-olds cost to conceive
Aclaim - Acclamation x Aris (Danroad)
    Location: The National Stud, UK
    2018 Fee: £12,500
This Group 1 winning son of Acclamation had his first crop yearlings make up to 145,000gns and go into training with a large number of well-respected trainers. Acclamation is already represented by the likes of Dark Angel and Mehmas in the stallion ranks and it will be no surprise if Aclaim can do as well as them. His win in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret over 7 furlongs on his last start confirmed him as a top-class racehorse, with his improvement all the way through his career making him an enjoyable horse to follow and I am really looking forward to seeing his progeny hit the track.

Ardad - Kodiac x Clodora (Red Clubs)
    Location: Overbury Stud, UK
    2018 Fee: £6,500
Ardad was a lightning-fast son of Kodiac whose performances as a 2-year-old were nothing short of breath-taking. He made a winning racecourse debut only 7 weeks after being sold for £170,000 at the breeze up sales. Ardad then won the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, remarkably just 6 days after that maiden victory, in a faster time than the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes for older horses over the equivalent distance on the same day. Ardad’s ascent continued onto the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster, beating the likes of The Last Lion and Prince of Lir. Kodiac’s first stallion sons’ progeny hit the track last year and produced significant results. They were Prince of Lir, Coulsty, Adaay and Kodi Bear. All of them produced at least one black type horse and it will be surprising if Ardad can’t do the same.

Caravaggio - Scat Daddy - Mekko Hokte (Holy Bull)
    Location: Coolmore Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €35,000
Caravaggio was nicknamed “The Ballydoyle Bullet” for a reason, and with the large of amount of top class sprinters that have been trained there it would be wise to take note. By Scat Daddy, the sire of super sire No Nay Never, Caravaggio’s stock were well received at the sales on both sides of the Atlantic. An unbeaten 2-year-old of 4 races, he is from a smart US family which consists of his dam being a stakes winner on dirt by Holy Bull. As a result of this and other contributing factors, Coolmore made the decision to move him to the US for the 2021 season. It will be really interesting to see how his progeny fare on the racecourse.
    Caravaggio

Churchill - Galileo x Meow (Strom Cat)
    Location: Coolmore Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €35,000
A champion 2-year-old by the worldwide champion sire in Galileo, Churchill boasts a seemingly perfect profile to be a successful stallion. A 4-time Group 1 winner over distances from 7 furlongs to 1 mile, his yearlings made up to 350,000gns in the autumn. Out of Meow, who was a 5 furlong 2-year-old stakes winner herself, it is expected that his progeny will be seen from the very start of the season. As well as being by Galileo who is the sire of successful stallions Frankel, New Approach and Teofilo to name but a few, he is also an own sister to Clemmie who won the Cheveley Park Stakes over 6 furlongs as a juvenile, thus highlighting his huge potential to excel with his stock.
    Curchill

Cotai Glory - Exceed and Excel x Continua (Elusive Quality)
    Location: Tally Ho Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €6,000
Cotai Glory was a very tough and talented son of Exceed and Excel, proving his worth by winning a stakes race over 5 furlongs at 2, 3 and 4 years of age while also finishing 3nd in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at 5. It is not hard to see why he is branded by his stud as “a commercial breeder’s dream”. He possesses durability and ability, two vital aspects to succeed as a sire. His stud also produced last season’s champion first season sire in Mehmas, while his first offspring made up to 180,000gns at the sales. It is with great excitement that his first runners will be welcomed to the track later this year.

Decorated Knight - Galileo x Pearling (Storm Cat)
    Location: Irish National Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €15,000
Decorated Knight has some of the most sought-after qualities in a stallion such as a top-class pedigree, longevity and ability. He has been really well-supported by his owners at stud and in the sales ring, something with which a stallion can struggle without. He is out of an own sister to successful stallion Giant’s Causeway which makes him a three-parts brother to Gleneagles. The latterly mentioned horse is a well-respected stallion in his own right and with Decorated Knight possessing very similar bloodlines; it will be with great interest that I will follow his stock this year.
    Decorated Knight

Divine Prophet - Choisir x Prophet Jewel (Encosta De Lago)
Location: Tara Stud, IRE / Aquis Farm, AUS
    2018 Fee: €7,500
A Group 1 winning son of Choisir, Divine Prophet only stood one season in Ireland, having returned to Australia since. Choisir is already the sire of successful stallions Starspangledbanner and Olympic Glory, so it will be no surprise if this horse is to succeed too. He already has done to a certain degree, with his first southern hemisphere runners yielding a black type horse in Fortunate Kiss. As a result, Divine Prophet is likely to sire plenty of nice horses over the coming year.

El Kabeir - Scat Daddy x Great Venue (Unbridled's Song)
    Location: Yeomanstown Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €8,000
This son of Scat Daddy will be relatively unknown to UK and Irish racegoers given the fact he raced purely in the US, but that does not mean he isn’t worth finding out about. His four stakes wins including a Group 2 at 2 and two Group 3s at 3, incorporating prize money just short of $1 million, mean he was a very high class horse on his day. He was well supported at the sales with a top price of 180,000gns. His stud has had many stallion successes before especially in the shape of Dark Angel, so it will be no shock to see El Kabeir deliver on the track also.

Galileo Gold - Paco Boy x Galicuix (Galileo)
    Location: Tally Ho Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €15,000
Winners of the 2000 Guineas always deserve a lot of attention when retiring to the stallion ranks and this son of Paco Boy is no different. Also a high-class 2-year-old as a winner of the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, he held and improved on his form as a 3-year-old, also notching a win in the St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. This and the 2000 Guineas are stallion-making races, with other horses who have done the double including Frankel and Rock of Gibraltar, both successful stallions in their own right. His progeny made up to £82,000 and his results will make for enticing reading.

Highland Reel - Galileo x Hveger (Danehill)
    Location: Coolmore Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €17,500
The admirable Highland Reel was a fabulous racehorse to follow, winning 10 races including 7 Group 1s while racing in 7 different countries over a 4-year career. His toughness on the track was a tremendous sight and it will be no surprise if his offspring inherit that. His earnings of over €9,500,000 speak for themselves. He won over distances from 7-12 furlongs, showing his versatility and precocity from a young age. His first yearlings made up to 320,000gns, and that one was a half-brother to star miler Palace Pier.
    Highland Reel

Mondialiste - Galileo x Occupandiste (Kaldoun)
Location: Elwick Stud, UK / Haras d’Annebault, FR
    2018 Fee: £6,000
A son of the mighty Galileo and out of the dual Group 1 winning mare Occupandiste, it is fair to say that Mondialiste boasts one of the best pedigrees on offer globally. He is a half-brother to the dam of already successful sire Intello, which bodes well for a productive future for Mondialiste. A dual Group 1 winner in the US, he has been supported by his owners, the Turnbulls, throughout his career and his stock are in training all over the UK.

National Defense - Invincible Spirit x Angel Falls (Kingmambo)
    Location: Irish National Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €12,000
As a Group 1 winning 2-year-old and by one of the world’s best in Invincible Spirit, it is not hard to see why National Defense was sought after by many as a stallion prospect. He raced only 5 times in a short career, but his win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere by 4½ lengths was nothing short of spectacular. Well supported by his owners Sun Bloodstock, his first crop has gone into training with Joseph O’Brien, Wesley Ward, Tim Easterby and many others. Invincible Spirit is already a successful sire of sires with Kingman, I Am Invincible and Lawman all providing Group 1 winners in 2020.
    National Defense

Postponed - Dubawi x Ever Rigg (Dubai Destination)
    Location: Dalham Hall Stud, UK
    2018 Fee: £20,000
A talented performer in his younger years, Postponed really bit top gear at 4 and 5, winning 3 Group 1s in a row during his 5-year-old career which included the Dubai Sheema Classic, Coronation Cup and Juddmonte International. By Dubawi who is already the sire of Night of Thunder, New Bay and Poet’s Voice, he also has a strong female line, having the Group 1 winning God Given as his half-sister. His first yearlings made up to £145,000 and although they may not be as early to hit the track as some of his other counterparts’ progeny, there is little doubt that they will possess bundles of quality.

Profitable - Invincible Spirit x Dani Ridge (Indian Ridge)
    Location: Kildangan Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €12,000
A brilliant speedster by the evergreen Invincible Spirit and out of a mare by Indian Ridge, it would be no surprise to see Profitable come out on top of this year’s first season sires table. A hardy 2-year-old who progressed into a world class sprinter at 4 and 5, Profitable has been supported by many leading breeders, owners and trainers who hold high hopes for him in 2021. It is important to note that Shadwell bought 5 six-figure yearlings by him, and his other yearlings made up to £145,000. It is with great excitement that his progeny is awaited on the racecourse in 2021.
    Profitable

Ribchester - Iffraaj x Mujarah (Marju)
    Location: Kildangan Stud, IRE
    2018 Fee: €30,000
A champion miler who broke his maiden in a 6 furlong Group 2 as a 2-year-old, Ribchester was nothing short of top-class. He acted on all types of ground and was one of the most consistent racehorses around at the time. By Iffraaj who is already the sire of the exciting Wootton Bassett, it would seem that Ribchester has everything in his place to become a world class sire too. His attributes were all that you could want in a racehorse and with his first stock making up to 350,000gns, the highest price paid for any yearling by this year’s first season sires, it is which great anticipation his first runners are awaited.
    Ribchester

Time Test - Dubawi x Passage Of Time (Dansili)
    Location: National Stud, UK
    2018 Fee: £8,500
Like many others in this preview, Time Test has a great pedigree to back up his solid racing performances. By Dubawi out of the 2-year-old Group 1 winning mare Passage Of Time, he possesses a great Juddmonte pedigree which is a boost to any stallion. Other successful stallions to come from a Juddmonte broodmare line are Frankel and Kingman. Time Test was no average racehorse either. He broke the 1 mile and 2 furlongs track record at Ascot as a 3-year-old as well as winning a Group 2 at 3 and 4. As a 5-year-old, he was exported to the US where he finished 2nd in 2 Group 1s and was then retired to stud at 6. His first crop yearlings realised up to 150,000gns and go into training with some of the leading trainers in the UK and Ireland.

Ulysses - Galileo x Light Shift (Kingmambo)
    Location: Cheveley Park Stud, UK
    2018 Fee: £30,000
Ulysses was a champion racehorse with a top-class page to back it up. A winner of the Coral Eclipse and the Juddmonte International at 4, he supported these performances with placed efforts in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the King George VI Stakes. His dam, Light Shift, won the Epsom Oaks so his family is full of Group 1 winners. Heavily supported by Cheveley Park, his progeny have gone into training with the likes of John Gosden, William Haggas and Sir Michael Stoute. His most expensive yearling was a colt out of Troarn, who made 320,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1.

    Internationally
In France, French Derby and Irish Champion Stakes heroes Almanzor and The Grey Gatsby head the line-up, but other Group 1 winners Brametot, Ectot, Ultra, Zarak and Zelzal are also worth keeping a close eye on. Recorder raced solely in the UK for the Queen, winning the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at 2, and his crop debut on the track this year after 3 seasons standing at Haras de Monfort et Preaux in Normandy. Another one to watch is Whitecliffsofdover, an ex-Ballydoyle inmate by War Front whose first runners will be observed with anticipation by French breeders.
In the US, two champions in Arrogate and Gun Runner have their first runners welcomed to the racecourse. Both of them won huge amounts of prize money throughout their careers, and it will be fascinating to follow the progress of their offspring throughout the year.

2-y-o racing gets underway in Ireland tomorrow.

    Curragh 1.30

First season sires Caravaggio (Silver Surfer) and Aclaim (Satin Snake) have runners. The former is out of the Kodiac mare Riskit Fora Biskit so there is plenty of speed there. Satin Snake is a gelded half-brother to a useful sprint handicapper in Staxton.

Aiden O'Brien makes an early start with his No Nay Never colt Cadamosto, the first runner for an Invincible Spirit mare Saucy Spirit who won on debut as a 2-y-o at Chelmsford but was beaten a long way on her only run at three in a York sprint handicap.

Missing Matron, by Vocalised, took the opening event of the new turf flat season. Made just about all to win easily by 4.75 lengths. The soft to heavy ground being less disadvantageous to her than her opponents. The well-supported (13/8f.) Silver Surfer finished 4th about 10 lengths behind the winner.

The second-placed It'll Do My Day was keeping on inside the final furlong.

    Saturday Doncaster 1.25 Brocklesby Stakes.

Forca Brasil by the FSS Cotai Glory was a late withdrawal. The race went to Chipotle who looks to be on the small side with not a lot of scope, but his attitude couldn't be crabbed, running on with a great deal of enthusiasm.

On to Naas Sunday 1.15. Carravagio supporters will be hoping that Tenebrism, trained by A. O'Brien, will get the new sire off the mark. He is trading at 6/5 at the moment but Jim Bolger has two runners 14/1 shot I Have A Voice (sire Vocalised) and Gaire Os Ard (dam sire Vocalised) at 9/2. Bolger's Vocalised filly Missing Matron appreciated the bog-like conditions at the Curragh last weekend and I can't see the ground being a lot better today.

Yesterday at Naas 1.15 Caravaggio had the first win by a FSS with Tenebrism winning quite impressively. Given a tour of Naas by Heffernan, on the inside early but switched around the whole field, she showed a nice turn of foot to impress lots of good judges. A little doubt in my mind is that when she took the lead about a furlong out she carried her head to the right and hung left. That could, of course, be accounted for by her lack of experience.

Profitable, who heads the market for top first season sire, has his first runner with Thunder Love in the first at Kempton 4.05 this evening. The filly is trained by a fairly new and successful trainer George Boughey. The dam, Nantyglo, was fairly useful on the track and has produced five winners including the smart 7f. horse Glendale.

Cotai Glory, also fancied for top FSS. has his first runner in Hollow Steel. She is out of a Beat Hollow mare who hasn't produced anything outstanding yet. She is trained by Alice Haynes at Newmarket, a new name to me but she has won two races from 15 runners.

Profitable had his first winner with Thunder Love a comfortable winner of the 4.05 at Kempton yesterday. The Cotai Glory filly Hollow Steel made a satisfactory debut to finish fifth and looks capable of doing better.

Thought Stunt ran a nice race too.

    Newcastle 1.40

First season sires represented by Liv Lucky (Profitable) and Pink Storm (Aclaim), I can't find anything inspirational on the dam side of this pair.

With two Kodiacs and a Dark Angel involved it doesn't look like an easy puzzle to solve.

The George Boughey-trained Cashew (Bated Breath) heads the market at the moment at 2/1 but Dark Terms (Dark Angel) at 5/2 trained by Archie Watson may well challenge her for favouritism by the off.

Yesterday’s Newcastle race proved disappointing for market followers with the first and second favourites filling the last two places. Neither Cashew nor Dark Terms showed a great deal to be honest. The winner Anadora, a second 2-y-o winner of the season for Havana Gold, and the second, Alaskan Jewel looked to be advantaged by racing and finishing strongly along the stand rail leaving the rest floundering on the apparently slower surface away from that rail. Anadora under a strong Kevin Stott ride got up narrowly close home.
Two 2-y-o races today. The Musselburgh 1.20 has only attracted 4 runners. Atomic Force, a son of first season sire Cotai Glory, is trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Kevin Stott, the connections of yesterday’s winning 2-y-o. He is trading at 3/1. The favourite at the moment is the Mark Johnston-trained The Gatekeeper. This Excelebration colt is out of a Montjeu mare and is a half-brother to a smart 12 furlong horse. Five furlongs at Musselburgh might be a bit sharp for him.
The race at Cork 3.10 looks much too difficult. Three first season sires (FSS) are represented; Jarvis (Profitable), Satin Snake (Aclaim) and Shinkansen (Caravaggio) There are three running that have already had a race, that in itself can be a big advantage. A.P.O’Brien has a No Nay Never debutant, Cadamosto.
A race for watching, I think. If you twisted my arm really viciously I might suggest a very small interest in Wild Eyed Girl. This Mehmas filly didn’t have the happiest of introductions at Naas, became upset in stalls, in rear early didn’t have the clearest of runs lost out on fourth place by a nose close home, finished a long way off the first two but if she was not too traumatised by that debut effort she is likely to improve and 16/1 is the price available.

    Yesterday.
    Musselburgh 1.20
Doubts about The Gatekeeper’s speed were without foundation. Smartly away, always disputing lead and pulling away from his rivals inside the final furlong. Atomic Storm did OK on debut.
    Cork 3.10
Previous race experience told with It’ll Do My Day, benefiting from his Curragh second, getting back up on the line to take this from the Starspangledbanner debutant Castle Star. Wild Eyed Girl had a much happier experience this time but after disputing the lead with the winner for much of the race ran out of puff inside the final furlong. Could be a few winners to come out of this Two that I’ll be keeping my eye on are the Profitable colt, Jarvis and the Caravaggio, Shikansen. I see that Cool And Clever (Vocalised – Jim Bolger), who finished fourth is one of those ‘lucky’ foals who were born on January 1st.
The fare today is at Southwell (not my favourite course) 1.36. Only seven runners but still quite interesting. Robbie Roger, the first runner for FSS Galileo Gold, represents trainer George Boughey, whose 2-y-os seem to be the flavour of the month. Makalu is the 11/10f. at the moment having finished third in the Brocklesby, he is by Mehmas, whose progeny seem suited by this surface and trained by Kevin Ryan, whose 2-y-os, on early evidence are quite forward. One more to keep an eye on for the future, perhaps, is Edison Kevani, he is an already gelded son of Kodiac an excellent 2-y-o sire but quite often his need a run.

    Yesterday Southwell 1.36
The two that dominated the betting were a trifle disappointing. The favourite Robbie Roger, a Galileo colt making his debut wasn’t a complete flop, showed speed to race prominently but was left behind in the last furlong and finished third beaten approx. three lengths. Second favourite, Makalu, hadn’t seemed to have come on for his third in the Brocklesby and ran a strange race early on, the Racing Posts comments suggested that he became unbalanced after trying to jump over shadows! Reviewing the race the only shadows around are those of the horses. Whatever, it meant that he had ground to make up, he struggled to do that and never really got into contention. The winner, General Panic, is by Outstrip a sire (I have read on Twitter) whose offspring do particularly well on Fibresand. I did mention in my preview that I would be interested in the run of Edinson Kevani, sent off 28/1 he struggled with the early pace but was switched to the outside a furlong out and ran on promisingly.
Today’s sole 2-y-o action is at Kempton 1.45. I can’t work up any great enthusiasm for any of them. Ribchester, a FSS, has his first runner with Mirique, who is out of a Jeremy mare and probably will need further. Aclaim, another FSS, has two in this Noble Albert and Wild Mountain. Another that I should mention is Mythical Star, he is by Starspangledbanner who does well with his 2-y-os.

Yesterday Kempton 1.45. With Mythical Star a non-runner there were just six runners for this. Sean Woods, whose General Panic won at Southwell on Sunday, has taken over the trainer-flavour-of-the-month role resulting in his runner here, Meng Tian, being sent off the 6/4 favourite. The money looked well placed when the Territories-sired colt came with a storming run late on but the eventual winner Dukebox ran on gamely to get his head narrowly in front on the line. The un-fancied Ribchester debutante, Mirique, was almost four lengths back in third.
Today’s excitement! is at Bath 2.40. Two of today’s field ran in the Brocklesby, Wonderful World, who went off 7/2 joint second favourite, finished a satisfactory second and Muskateer Three (a 14/1 shot) finished 5th. Today the former is 11/10f and the latter 6/1. You takes your choice. As to the one’s making their debut, there are two by FSS Ardad, one by FSS Cotai Glory and one by last season’s top FSS Mehmas.
