Two things 1-I will be backing Minella for the Gold Cup to pay for my daughters first year in University 2)I wouldn’t be backing him today -obviously as a potential Gold Cup winner he will be trying but we are 18 weeks away from the big day.
Great stuff Luke, you had the f/c and all with Apt.
Super week all round for Hdb, and for Waterford with Colreevy gutsing it out today.

    Regarding the race

I really enjoyed it. The distance between the top 2 and third and third and the rest is impressive.

I think APT was ridden to get the trip. If they had the race again, not sure he'd be as far back

Thought Rachel rode Paul Townend to sleep again in what seemed to be a recurring theme through the week. In fairness to the latter she rode everyone else to sleep as well!

But ABP had no chance after being boxed in. Doubt he’d have won anyway

Frodon made it a true test and a shame (for my pocket!) that he couldn’t hang on for 4th

A very good and worthy winner

ABP made at least two jumping errors and was no where as slick as he was last year, the gap that Towned rode for came and he simply wasnt good enough to go through, the previous errors taking there toll, nothing to do with jockey for me, he actually did well to finish as close as he did to be honest. Front two have run above anything that he faced in his two wins and he probably ran to exactly the same mark he did the two years previously, take the front two out and how far was he ahead of the rest.

Definitely one of the better Gold Cups.

ABP would have been closer with better luck in running (I'll check again but I noted him losing a few lengths at a critical point) but Minella definitely had plenty left. He has a 180+ in him going forward. Last year's novices are proving really hot.

Good race. The winner was slicker. APT lost couple of lengths 7 out. From 4 out the winner was much quicker away from the fence.
Often the case where having the choice of ride doesn't pay.

Just goes to show how difficult it is for us punters with a lot less evidence!

Which horse are you going to rate the race through?

It's dangerous rating the horse through one horse.

The problem with this race is that Frodon took everything bar the first three out of their comfort zone so only the front three ran their races. I had MI and APT down as likely to be 10lbs better than last year's festival form but in my ratings table had them respectively only 3lbs and 7lbs behind ABP. I had much more faith in the likelihood that MI would stay but I won't deny I was worried about his last two runs. Fortunately I had backed him ante-post for the Gold Cup on the morning of each of those runs in the hope of seeing something special.

I've never really been able to come up with a really big figure for ABP and felt he was there for the taking against some above-average ex-novices.

I'll also look at the times before arriving at a figure. If it ends up 35lbs and more faster than the Foxhunters' it will consolidate my positive gut feeling based on what I was watching. All through the race I was thinking I was watching a proper race.

Thanks for your explanation. I agree with it also.

It did feel like a very good race.

Native couldn't live with the pace, frodon took them on and minella got peach of a ride and a lovely passage through
