I wasn’t particularly surprised by the performance of the first three, but I was terribly disappointed to see Allart fall. He had been jumping competently prior to tipping over and I hope it’s not dented him or his confidence too much. Mind you, I fully expect to recover my losings (considerable) on him in the future and I won’t be at all surprised to see him develop into one of the top chasers around.

    SPECIAL ACCEPTANCE

    Doncaster 30 January 2021
Sky Bet Money Back As Cash Handicap Chase (Northern Lights Staying Chase Series Qualifier)
    3m, Class 4, £4,288.68

Special Acceptance was jumped into by the winner over the third last and again at the second last losing nearly a length to the winner each time. Switched left to avoid the same at the last then switched right on the run-in he rallied towards the finish going down by half a length with the rest fifteen lengths away. The interference may have made the difference, although the stewards didn’t think so.

An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference at both the third last and second last fence, when the winner THE LATE LEGEND, ridden by Sean Bowen, interfered with SPECIAL ACCEPTANCE, placed second, ridden by Tom O’Brien. After taking into account where both incidents occurred, the material extent of the interference suffered and the official margin of ½ a length, the Stewards considered that the interference had not improved THE LATE LEGEND’s placing and ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The interference was found to be accidental in that at the third last fence, THE LATE LEGEND jumped slightly right-handed giving a slight bump to SPECIAL ACCEPTANCE and jumped right-handed again at the second-last fence carrying the gelding marginally off its intended line, despite the rider’s best efforts to correct THE LATE LEGEND on both occasions.

Worth keeping in mind for his next race at a similarly level.

NAAS today. Aarons Day was left at the start then bumped towards the end of the race: still came second but it obviously won’t have gone unnoticed. Thermistocles and My Mind Reader both ran good races at big prices albeit not troubling the winners. I was on My Mind Reader but he annoyingly came 4th. Will watch out for him when he goes handicapping.

    FANTASTIC LADY

    Warwick 3 February 2021
Racing TV Mares' "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race)
    2m3f, Class 3, £5,913.18
    Going: Heavy

Fantastic Lady came to win her race at the second last and looked to be holding the winner at the last when she tipped over. The rest were well behind by this stage. It was a good run and confirmed the promise she had shown in her debut, although she did seem to take exception to being given a crack by Nico approaching the last. More to come, I think.

Very tired fall, winner would have got up in my opinion....

Uptown Lady previous race reported to the stewards...
Held up in rear, went poor fourth run-in, never near to challenge (jockey said, regarding running and riding, that his instructions were to be handily away, give the mare plenty of room and try to get the mare run as well as she could; jockey explained that the mare had been an expensive recruit for the yard, but disappointed on both runs under rules last season, once in a bumper and also on its hurdling debut, adding that the mare has also had wind issues during training in preparation for this; jockey stated that the mare settled well off a moderate pace and after being a little big at the first hurdle, had jumped well for the majority of the race; he added that the mare had made a respiratory noise going down the hill towards the end of the back straight, and was outpaced when the tempo increased going down the side of the track into the home turn; jockey further explained that being mindful of the mare's previous wind issues and the fact she had repeatedly made respiratory noise's over the final half a circuit, he had wanted to keep a good hold of her head and help her through the heavy going on this occasion; jockey thought the mare had stayed on to good effect through tired horses and only finished as close as she did because of the manner in which he had handled her, particularly in the home straight; jockey maintained that he had been constantly niggling and squeezing the mare forward in the home straight, predominantly through the use of his legs and knees, whilst trying to keep the bit up in the mare's mouth, so she didn't step at her hurdles and had also used the whip on three occasions; trainer's rep said she was unaware of the rider's instructions, but expressed satisfaction with the ride which the mare was given; vet said 2 post-race examinations failed to reveal any abnormalities, other than a minor laceration to the left-foreleg) (op 13/2).

Fantastic lady.Prominent, nudged along going best home turn, pushed along to lead before 2 out, soon ridden and flashed tail, 1 length ahead when fell last (op 15/2 and tchd 8/1)

    Uptown lady 40/1

Held up in behind leaders, not fluent 2nd, pushed along after 3 out, went second before 2 out, 1 length down and ridden when mistake but left in lead last, hung right and pushed out run-in (trainer said, regarding improved performance, that mare had benefitted from a wind operation following the mare's previous run) (op 25/1)

You may be right, maxb, but even if she hadn’t hung on it would still have been a performance considerably in advance of her earlier debut run. She was up a Class as well.

    Time To get Up...
Two days on the trot now, A Johnjo horse that had been reported to the stewards dots up at a good price, backed in from 20's this morning...

Midfield, lost position 10th, soon towards rear, shaken up before 3 out, kept on approaching last, went modest third towards finish, eyecatcher (jockey said, regarding running and riding, his instructions were to jump off and sit handy, with a view to getting gelding in a nice jumping rhythm on the gelding's first run over fences, after a 329 day lay-off. jockey added that gelding's early jumping was novicey, but improved as the race progressed, however when the leaders quickened up exiting the back straight, the gelding was initially out-paced and ran into the bottom of the cross-fence losing ground. he further added that turning into the home straight, he felt gelding commence to tire and thereafter the gelding lugged left-handed, so he chose to ride a hands and heels finish, which served to ensure gelding found the line and achieved the best possible placing. jockey also explained that as gelding is a long-striding horse, the gelding may prove to be better suited to a more galloping track in future) (op 12/1)

    KYNTARA

    Warwick. 15 February 2021
Paddy Power Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)
    2m, Class 5, £2,274.30
    Going: Heavy

Although the ground was suspect and you could only guess at the quality of the opposition this was an eye-popping performance from Kyntara. He led the field a merry dance and just moved further away as soon as he was asked until they were just a speck in the distance.
