I expect a reason will emerge in due course.

Never mind. One of my Ayr Gold Cup horses will recoup the losses

    SHE’S A NOVELTY

    Newton Abbot 19 September 2020
newtonabbotracing.com Mares' Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race)
    2m1f, Class 4, £3,768.84
    Going: Good

She’s a Novelty was given a gentle introduction at Bangor where she performed ok finishing sixth of eleven despite absolutely hating the heavy ground. She did much better here in coming second despite Paddy Brennan having to fight with her a bit in the early stages and she making a mess of the third and being a bit clumsy at one or two others. Misstree Song (who was five lengths clear when she fell at the last and a clear “winner without penalty”, although it was a heavy fall which she may remember for a bit) had been some 24 lengths ahead of She’s a Novelty at Bangor - it would have been in single figures this time had the favourite not fallen. A low key race, of course, but She’s a Novelty looks capable of winning something similar.

Oh This Is Us won a piece easier than the margin suggests, at Chelmsford today. Has an entry in the B365 Challenge (7f, Ascot) in 2 weeks time. Penalty for today would put him off 107 - not an impossible task, on his favoured fast ground.

    EYREN

    Warwick 22 September 2020
Visit racingtv.com Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race) (Div II)
    2m, Class 4, £3,768.84
    Going: Good

The odds-on favourite attracted heavy support and won easily, but I was attracted by the slick hurdling of EYREN who gained half a length or so at most hurdles. Aside, that is, from a blemish when she was a bit flat footed at the second last after she knocked it flat. She hasn’t run for a year and ran a good race, doing particularly well to recover from losing her way a bit (and position) mid race to finish a comfortable second. She did get a bit of late support and a race of this sort seems well within her compass.

    ALOE VERA

    Newmarket 25 September 2020
    Eqtidaar Godolphin Stakes (Listed Race)
    1m4f, Class 1, £17,013
    Going: Good

I was hoping for great things from Aloe Vera this year and it’s disappointing that she’s not been seen since her impressive Goodwood win in May 2019. Obviously something amiss (anyone know what?) so looking to this run to see that all is now well. For a Class 1 race this was pretty low key so I suppose the most that can be said is that she performed satisfactorily. She’s got an entry in the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Group 1) at Ascot in a couple of weeks, but it will be a tough assignment.

Crownthorpe (2.05 Hayd, today) held out the back off a steady pace, finished 3rd without really trying.

    One for the near future.

    AJERO

    Huntington 30 September 2020
MansionBet Beaten By A Head Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race)
    2m, Class 4, £3,768.84
    Going: Good

Kim Bailey really likes this horse and expected a good run today in his hurdles debut. As the race went he continually ducked and dived all over the place giving Harry Cobden a torrid time and his hurdling was not of the best. Despite all this he was there over the last and moved to challenge the odds-on favourite, he moved alongside then dived again and Cobden had to snatch him up and drop him back to go the other side of the winning favourite. Without that snatching up he looked as though he would have gone on to win. Needs a bit of work but very promising.

    ENSYAABY

    Salisbury 1 October 2020
Byerley Stud British EBF Novice Stakes (Plus 10 Race) (Div I)
    7f, Class 4, £5,110.51
    Going: Soft

ENSYAABY was very unlucky. He had raced on the outside and come through nicely into the final furlong and still 3 or 4 lengths behind the eventual 20/1 winner he was knocked off his stride when heavily bumped by the eventual third. Recovered to make up all the ground but a head. Would surely have won without the bump.

    I K BRUNEL

    Fontwell 2 October 2020
Visit attheraces.com Beginners' Chase (GBB Race)
    2m5½f, Class 4, £4,288.68
    Going: Soft

I’ve been looking forward to I K Brunel’s first try over fences and I thought this was a sound introduction. He jumped well, although he was a bit awry at the last which may have proved significant, and he finished strongly only to go down by a short head to the chase experienced favourite with the third 4 lengths away. Only a small race, but it was a good start and I’m sure he’ll go on to better things.

    TRUCKERS PASS

    Ffos Las 8 October 2020
Ed Culham Tips @tipstersempire.co.uk EBF "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle (Qualifier) (GBB Race)
    2m, Class 4, £3,768.84
    Going: Heavy

Truckers Pass is a horse likely being prepared for better things and this wasn’t a bad run as a debut pipe opener. He looked to have it won coming to the second last last but a tired looking left hand lurch lost him ground and momentum. He repeated the dose at the last and Richard Johnson didn’t get physical with him on the run in once the winner went past with the third over thirty lengths away. Promising.

    MCFABULOUS

    Chepstow 9 October 2020
Unibet Persian War Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
    2m3½f, Class 1, £17,085
    Going: Good

Still a novice because of the rule change McFabulous certainly didn’t run like one. He was head and shoulders superior to his opponents in all aspects, breezed through the race and won as he liked with any amount in hand. It’s not as if the race was a dawdle and they went a fair old clip with the time 1.35 seconds fast in going which was described as good despite that they were throwing up divots all over the place and quite a few horses were scratched during the day. I doubt he was fully tuned up either and I thought it was a seriously impressive performance.

They said on racing radio that he was going to Newbury and will then be aimed at the Stayers.

I backed Maskada today as there seemed to be money going on it. Got pushed back early on; either a mistake or was impeded but supposedly was finishing really well. Didn't actually see the race, though but will keep an eye on it next time. Mind you, most things I back either 'didn't break well' [flat] or 'didn't jump the first very well' [jumps].
