The 2019-20 campaign produced the lowest ratings on record for hurdlers with no horse rated 165 or higher for the first time in the Anglo-Irish jumps classification's history.
The Willie Mullins-trained Sharjah topped the billing with a rating of 164, 2lb higher than his Cheltenham conqueror Epatante – who won the Champion Hurdle by three lengths and was receiving a 7lb fillies' allowance. Last season, Espoir d’Allen recorded a rating of 170.
Paisley Park has been dropped 7lb on last year's rating to join If The Cap Fits on 162. Emma Lavelle's stable star won the Cleeve Hurdle in January before finishing a lacklustre seventh behind Lisnagar Oscar (160) in the Stayers' Hurdle.



Al Boum Photo and Cyrname have been named the joint highest-rated jump horses from the 2019-20 season, rated 173 in the Anglo-Irish jump classifications revealed on Tuesday.
Overall, the top ratings for chasers and hurdlers is much lower than last year, blamed partly on a curtailed campaign – with Aintree and Punchestown cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic – and a shorter standard of quality performances noted by the handicappers.
The highest rating achieved by Al Boum Photo and Cyrname is the lowest since Many Clouds in 2016-17 while, for the first time since the classifications started in 2000, there is no hurdler rated higher than 165. Sharjah tops the rankings with a rating of 164.
Al Boum Photo and Cyrname's ratings have decreased from last season. The Willie Mullins-trained eight-year-old, a back-to-back Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, is down from 175 to 173, having only raced twice last season.

I can't help but think that if Min, Saint Calvados and A Plus Tard had ran in the Champion Chase, Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle and Benie Des Dieux in the Stayers, those races would all have been stronger from a form perspective. This in tandem with the season being curtailed prevented these horses from demonstrating their full potentials.

I'm also struggling to see how Al Boum Photo regressed last season as for all the Gold Cup was a bunched finish, it featured all of the right horses.

Fair enough analysis; not a year for going overboard ; few horses put up two standout performances to hang a high rating on and covid 19 did the rest.
Rock on for the future with high hopes for better.

I wonder if there's a Dominic Gardner-Hill factor in the classifications.

He took over from Phil Smith and has a history of conservatism when it comes to ratings.
