    2-y-o racing Wed. June 10th.

    Pontefract 12.45

Probably a moderate affair. The winner, Inhaler raced prominentl throughout and kept on well through the final furlong to hold off Dandy's Max (raced prominently, a running on Disco Beats and the strong finishing Tinochio, the last named was a long way back at half-way.

    Pontefract 1.15

Another ordinary maiden won by Bon Vitesse probably benefiting from a previous run at Newcastle. She led or disputed the lead throughout, her and the favourite Susucaru basically having the race to themselves. Both the third, Listen Again, and fourth, Lucy Rules, were running on well.

    Navan 1.00

I was quite impressed with the all the way winner Frenetic. Sent off favourite, she was qickly into here stride and was soon in front, quickening from the front she never looked in danger of being caught. The second and third, both trained by A.P.O'Brien, ran nice races on debut.

    Navan 2.30

Another "made all" winner (seems to be a theme since the season 'restarted'). This time it was the Aiden O'Brien-trained, Chief Little Hawk, who was the trail-blazer. They didn't seem to be going that quickly to my eye but his opponents never really got in a blow.

    Yarmouth 5.40

Only the five runners but a very close finish (as Mr. Thompson remarked "one for the judge"). Frankie on the second favourite Willabell tried to make all after breaking well and "not messing about" entering the final furlong it looked as if he the tactic had been successful but Kadapul under a strong ride from James Doyle just got up by a short head.

    Kempton 5.00

Early pace wasn't very fast for this 7f. event. The eventual winner, Miami Joy ,certainly wanted to go faster but Sean Levey did a good job to settle him down. The Mark Johnston horse, Night Moment went right from the stalls but was soon disputing the lead with Miami Joy. they dominated the race in the straight with the result going to the 40/1 shot by a short head. Rommel, repeortedly very green in the preliminaries made good ground through the field in the straight to take third. Speedful who finished fourth also made ground late on.
Ah! but a man's reach should exceed his grasp......

It seems the two Navan winners won in respectable times. Frenetic ran faster than either of the two handicap winners over the same trip and Chief Little Hawk as good as matched the winner's time in the 3yo maiden - 0.05 seconds of a difference.

Yesterday Lingfield 4.35 FSS ESTIDHKAAR had a winner with Risque.

    Today's runners:

    Wolverhampton 12.00

THE LAST LION - Branston Lion (out of a mare who has mainly produced 10-12f. horses)
    BOBBY"S KITTEN - Illustrator

    Kempton 12.45

    AWTAAD - Live Stream
    MEHMAS - Mutahamisa (half-sister to Still Standing a 10f. black-type performer)
COULSTY - The Chain (half-sister to black-type sprinter, she didn't show a lot when 7th of 9 at Newmarket on debut)

    Curragh 4.05

    AWTAAD - Cooper's Hawk

    Newbury 7.00

    KODI BEAR - Bare Grills
    KODI BEAR - Kodi Kub
    MEHMAS - Marsabit (half-brother to black-type sprinter)
    ADAAY - Onaraggatip
    NEW BAY - Perotto

    Newbury 7.30

    NEW BAY - First Prophet
THE GURKHA - Majd Al Arab

There are no first season sires represented in the other 2-y-o race today Wolverhampton 1.00 but, with Winter Power (8/11) third to Petekai on debut taking on Jojo Rabbit (11/8) second to Talbot at Lingfield four days ago, it should be a useful form guide.

    2-y-o racing June 11th.

    Beverley 12.45

Brazen Belle was made favourite, she was well drawn but not the quickest away from the stalls she raced comfortably just behind the leaders and kept on well to hold off the challengers inside the final furlong. Miss Milby, in second place ran on well from a poor draw and the third Crown Princess, another drawn fairly wide was prominent until weakening close home.

    Lingfield 4.35

Only five runners for this but quite an exciting finish. The winne, Risque, is not very big but she put her little bit of experience to good use, looking beaten as they turned into the straight she found plenty to get up in the last 100 metres. The second, Tenth Century, tried to make all but couldn't hang on, the Good Ting was running on at the one pac at the finish.

    Yarmouth 6.00

Another smal field but again an exciting finish. The Haggas-trained Yazaman was a very strong favourite for this, going off 10/11, but he looked in trouble when the pace quickened two out, but Tom Marquand really got to work on him, quickening up and then went a length clear at the line. The third horse Nurse Florence made an encouraging debut, on the big side she missed the break and trailed the field early but she finished strongest of all, will definitely benefit for the run.

    2-y-o racing Friday 12th. June

    Wolverhampton 12.00

An ordinary event with seven horses finishing within three lengths of each other. Choritzo, ridden by Hollie Doyle (getting lots of winners), took the lead inside the final furlong and ran on to win by a neck.

    Wolverhampton 1.00

The expected battle between Winter Power (4/6) and Jojo Rabbit (5/4) soon developed but didn't last as long as expected. The first-named threw in towel as they entered the final two furlongs with Jojo (Hollie Doyle again) kept up the strong gallop to win convincingly. Plum Run, racing in third place, ran on past the weakening favourite to pinch second place.

    Kempton 12.45

The well-drawn Live Stream was content to race just off the pace in about fourth place. She moved up to challenge as they turned into the straight and kept on well to hold off the late challengers. Nothing took the eye in behind.

    Curragh 4.05

A very nice debut by the Kingman colt, Admiral Nelson. Not the quickest into his stride he raced just off the pace and travelled well, moved up to challenge inside the two marker then took it up 100 metres from the line, getting the better of anther A.P. O'Brien inmate Merchant's Quay. Running on well inside the final furlong was Mateo Cruz, he just failed to nick third place.

    Newbury 7.00

Only the first three really got into this but there were a few in behind who were making headway and will improve for the run. The winner, Qaader was always in contention just swapping places between himself and the second, Running Back with Perotto racing just behind. The winner quickened two furlongs out and despite veering left ran on to win convincingly. The form looks decent and there should be plenty of winners coming out of the race.

    Newbury 7.30

The pace wasn't that strong early on with the winner, First Prophet disputing the lead with Majd Al Arab (Mark Johnston), Paws For Thought raced in third. Travelling well but looking very green First Prophet took the lead and ran well to win, he fought off the strong challenge of the favourite Al Watan. Paws For Thought ran an interesting race, he looked as if he would weaken out of it when the closers went past him but he ran on again in the last 100 metres to snatcg third on the line.

    2-y-o racing Saturday 13th. June

    Doncaster 12.00

Rebel At Dawn was made favourite(10/11) off his second on debut at Newcastle. He did collect but it was no clear cut victory. The horse broke well and made just about allbut he drifted right inside the last two furlongs and stopped the run of the second favourite Emirati Dirham, I don't think there was contact but Oisin Murphy had to stop riding and switch his run, losing a lot of momentum in the process. Meanwhile, debutant Rolfe Rembrandt (two sizes bigger than most of the field) was making a strong run along the rails, finishing second. Another newcomer, Ubettabelieveit, overcame a scruffy start to track the winner down the centre of the track, he was left on his own when that horse swerved to the rails but he kept on well and comes out of the race with credit.

    Doncaster 1.05

Sparkling Perry(25/1) was very keen in front and held on to make all. She had been unsighted on debut but her trainer James Given (interviewed after the race) explained that the filly was homebred and that because of that she was very green and totally lost on that debut at Newcastle. Both placed horses Magesterium and Hagar showed enough on debut to encourage connections.

    Doncaster 1.40

Only four runners for this and all newcomers. They went a fairly leisurely place to about three out and when the pace quickened then the Gosden-trained Frankel-sired, Seventh Kingdom looked in trouble but once David Egan sorted the horse he ran on in typical tigerish Frankel fashion to run out a comfortable winner.

    Sandown 12.55

With a non-runner and two withdrawn after refusing to go into the stalls just the three were left to race. It proved to be not much more than an exercise canter for the favourite, Happy Romance, but he did quicken nicely through the final furlong.

    Curragh 4.35

Dickiedooda (I admit I have an issue with the naming of horses but c'mon) a daughter of Starspangledbanner and trained by Mrs. Harrington made all to take this. Probably lots of future winners in behind but it will be a surprise if the horse in second place, Grammata, does not win soon. Finest (by The Gurkha and trained by A.P.O'Brien), back in fifth, will have enjoyed the outing.

    Leicester 5.00

Quite a tight affair. The winner, Isabella Giles, broke well and raced prominently, took the lead about a furlong but had to be ridden out to fend off the challenges of two debutantes, the second Famille Rose (finished strongly up the stand rail) and third, Alghada (prominent throughout).

    Early days but:

BELARDO 3 wins from 8 runs
    ESTIDHKAAR 2/6
    BOBBY'S Kitten 2/10
    KODI BEAR 2/8

Those three big-price winners made me have a look at the results for all the FSS runners this season. Now I'm almost certain that no-one would back them all blindly but:

Runners 124 Winners 17 Profit (approx) 57 points.
    Winners at 40/1, 22/1, 20/1, 20/1, 18/1.

    Just saying!

    2-y-o racing Sunday 14th. June

    Goodwood 1.10

Stream, a Frankel filly trained by Archie Watson, was made 6/4f. to take this and after the first couple of furlongs the money looked well placed. Entering the final furlong she was still at the front but she had no answer to the turn of pace of the eventual winner Lullaby Moon, who had raced a couple of lengths behind the favourite more toward the middle of the course. Nothing in behind caught my eye.

    Doncaster 12.15

Only the five runners but it turned into quite an interesting race. Significantl,y who had looked a little unlucky when second on debut at Newcastle, went off at 4/9 and again may have been unlucky as he cocked up when breaking from the stalls being slow to pick up and giving the field a couple of lengths start. Uncle Jumbo, the outsider of the field at 18/1, broke well and made just about all, he may have been headed inside the final furlong but he ran on determinedly to hold off the favourite. Diamondonthehill may be worth keeping an eye on, he has a bit of size and wasn't the quickest away from the stalls seemed to about to make a challenge inside thr final furlong but looked to become unbalanced and veered left away from the rail and the chance, if there was one, was gone.

    Doncaster 12.50

Only four runners and only two of those looked to have any chance. Mark Johnston's Dubai Fountain was made 4/7 and Roger Varian's She Do was 7/4.and that's the way it worked out. Surprise, surprise, Johnston's made the running andexcept for a promising looking challenge between the two and the one markers the result didn't really look in doubt.

    Newmarket 2.10

Only the six runners but quite competitive, approaching the final furlong there were six in a line spread across the course. Cooperation made 5/4 favourite after a promising debut at this course the week before looked the likeliest winner at that point but he started wandering and Apres Dark, the least fancied and a 22/1 chance, who had been held up towards the back early came through to pick off the favourite and win with a bit in hand.

    2-y-o racing Monday June 15th.

    Goodwood 12.00

Two non-runners left only three in this and there must be a doubt about the value of the form. Perotto the 5/4 favourite won but there was nothing impressive about the victory.

    Goodwood 1.40

Seems strange that there have been so many small field 2-y-o races latel, only five set off in this 7f. event. Four newcomers and the 66/1 shot Karluk River, beaten a long way on her debut at Lingfield where she finished last of 10. The outsider was still very green, swerving left from the stalls and racing freely under her inexperienced rider, still she was in a challenging position 3 out but weakened quickly and ended up jumping tje finishing line. The winner, Feathers, looked well prepared (Hannon) raced on the rail just off the pace, went to the front a furlong out and then was all out at the line to just hold off the strong challenge of Basilicata (M.Johnston0, verdict was a short head.

    Pontefract 12.20

The Mark Johnston-trained Better By Far tried to make all (surprise there) but lost his action approaching the final furlong and was eased right down, I hope the problem isn't too serious. The winner, Escape Route was slow from the stalls and was out the back most of the way, brought wide around the turn he got up in the last 50 metres.

    Pontefract 12.50

Two debutantes fought out a tight finish with Candescence, who raced prominently, just holding off the strong finishing Kraken Power. Time For A Good Un ran an interesting race on debut, not going well early on he made some ground on the outside of the field as they came round the final bend but the run petered out.

    Fairyhouse 1.00

The well-bred, half-brother to Sioux Nation, Giorgio Vasari went off the 13/8f., he raced prominently just behind the leader, he was just about to hit the front a furlong when the winner State Of Rest just breezed past him on the outside. Son beats father once again

    Chepstow 4.55

The easy winner Time Scale had been made favourite on her debut when 7th. at Newmarket after being slowly away. Wasn't guilty of that crime here, well away raced prominently and pulled away in the final furlong. Sophie B, making her debut, may be worth making a note of slowly away and struggling to go the pace was making up a lot of ground late on to finish fourth.

A lot of these FSS seem to be getting winners.

Except MEHMAS, ED, lots of runners and many have run well but just the one winner, Muker, who runs at Ascot today, I don't see him winning either.

He must be a big disappointment Colin. Fascinates me that the leading FSS in France is the Kendargent colt Goken. Has had 4 winners of 5 races and up until today has had the only Listed 2yo winner. As my interest in racing and breeding started in the '60s it's reassuring to see a sire from the Grey Sovereign line doing so well. A sire who was the go-to speed sire in those days.
Goken's mum is also a bit out of the ordinary with sires I like: for example Indian Ridge and his sire Ahonoora. Goken has only one line of Northern Dancer in his first five generations which makes him a super outcross. Will his produce show the class to justify people sending their Northern Dancer saturated mares to him?
