2-y-o racing 2020 (inc. First Season Sires)

    First Season Sires 2020

Below is a list of sires that will be having their first runners in 2020. The comments are only my opinion and they refer to the sires chances of being Champion First Season Sire i.e. most races won.

ADAAY Kodiac - Lady Lucia (Royal Applause)

Official Rating (OR) 110 Best Racing Post Rating (RPR) 116

A winner on 2-y-o debut over 6f. at Newbury in May. As a 3-y-o winner of 7f. Group 2 Hungerford also at Newbury. His own precocity and the fact that he is likely to have plenty of runners bode well for him.

AWTAAD Cape Cross - Asheera (Shamardal)

    OR 118 RPR 122

Didn’t see a racecourse until the October of his 2-y-o year but won on his second outing two weeks later over 7f. at Leopardstown. Winner of the 2016 Irish 2000 Guineas on Yielding ground. Likely to be well represented but his offspring might need a little time.

BELARDO Lope De Vega - Danaskaya (Danehill)

    OR 119 RPR 122

Won on his racecourse debut over 6f. at York in June going on to take the Group 1 Dewhurst on Soft ground. As a 4-y-o won the Group 1 Lockinge. Should have plenty of runners and has to be considered.

BOBBY”S KITTEN Kitten’s Joy - Celestial Woods (Forestry)

    OR 111 RPR 118

Second on 2-y-o debut over extended mile went one better over the same distance second time up. As a 3-y-o beat No Nay Never to take the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint over 6.5f on Good ground at Santa Anita. Finished his racing career with a win in a Listed event at Cork 6f. Heavy. Might not have enough runners.

BURATINO Exceed and Excel - Bergamask (Kingmambo)

    OR 108 RPR 117

Winner on his 2-y-o debut at 5f. Chelmsford in March. Best performance when second beaten half a length by Shalaa in the Group 1 Middle Park at Newmarket. Bit disappointing afterwards, best a fourth in the Sandy Lane over 6f. Good at Haydock. His stock should certainly be sharp and he should have plenty of runners.

CHARMING THOUGHT Oasis Dream - Annabelle’s Charm (Indian Ridge)

    OR 106 RPR 117

Did well at two, second on debut in August, won second time out (6f. Good to Firm) went on to beat hot favourite Ivawood to take the Group 1 Middle Park. Didn’t run at three, moderate efforts at four. Offspring should be sharp enough.
COULSTY Kodiac - Hazlum (In The Wings)

    OR 105 RPR 114

Won on racecourse debut at Leicester 5f. G/F.At three won Group 3 at Deauville over 6f. on very soft ground. As a 4-y-o was second in Hungerford on G/S. Might not have enough runners to be a contender.

    DARIYAN Shamardal - Daryakana (Selkirk)

    OR 119 RPR 118

Didn’t run as a 2-y-o. At three won a Group 2 at Deauville 10f. on heavy ground. As a 4-y-o winner of Group 1 Panay over 10.5f. Good. Unlikely to have enough runners in GB and Ireland.

ESTIDHKAAR Dark Angel - Danetimqe Out (Danetime)

    OR 109 RPR 118

Did well at 2, second on debut, won at Newbury 6.5 G/F on his second run, won Group 2 7f. Superlative(Newmarket) and Group 2 7f. Champagne(Doncaster). As a 3-y-o placed second in Group 3 Geenham Newbury 7f. G/F and finished his career winning the Listed Ben Marshall 8f. G/F as a 4-y-o.

FASCINATING ROCK Fastnet Rock - Miss Polaris (Polar Falcon)

    OR 123 RPR 125

Unplaced on his only run as a 2-y-o. At three won 10f. maiden at Leopardstown 10f. Soft/Heavy on debut in March and followed up in April winning a 10f. Group 3 at Navan on soft. As a 4-y-o ran second to Al Kazeem in 10f. Group 1 Tatts Gold Cup before winning the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot 10f. Good to Soft. The following year went one better to win the Tatts Gold Cup at The Curragh. His progeny are likely to need some time.

GOKEN Kendargent - Gooseley Chope (Indian Rocket)

    OR 104 RPR 113

Won 3 from 8 as a 2-y-o, won Group 3 5.5f. Maisons-Lafitte (good) as a 3-y-o and was third in King’s Stand at Ascot (5f. Soft) as a 4-y-o. Unlikely to have many runners here.

HARZAND Sea The Stars - Hazariya (Xaar)

    OR 121 RPR 124

Unplaced on his only run as a 2-y-o. Won 10f. Heavy Maiden at Cork on his 3-y-o debut. Three weeks later won the Group 3 Ballysax at Leopardstown 10f. Heavy. Won the Derby on Good to
Soft and Irish Derby on Good to Yielding. Disappointing in last two runs, retired to stud. Plenty of class but his progeny may need a little time.

KODI BEAR Kodiac - Hawattef (Mujtahid)

    OR 110 RPR 121

Got off the mark at his third attempt, runner up in 2014 Dewhurst Newmarket 7f. Soft. At three an impressive winner of a Group 3 at Salisbury 8f. Good. As a 4-y-o failed to place in 3 Group 1 and 1 Group 2. Should have plenty of ammunition.

MARKAZ Dark Angel - Folga (Atraf)

    OR 110 RPR 116

Won a 6f. Ascot Maiden 6f. G/F on his third run as a 2-y-o, run second in Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Newmarket 7f. Good. At three won Group 3 Criterion at Newmarket 7f. G/F. Following season took the 6f. Group 3 Chipchase at Newcastle A.W. Speedy family and likely to have lots of runners.

    MEHMAS Acclamation - Lucina (Machiavellian)

    OR 115 RPR 114

Won 4 and placed 4 times as a 2-y-o, winning a Chester 5f. Good Mdn. in May and the Group 2 Richmond Goodwood 6f. G/F. Didn’t run as a 3-y-o. Precocious type who is another who will have plenty of runners.

NEWBAY Dubai - Cinnamon Bay (Zamandar)

    OR 118 RPR 122

His only run as a 2-y-o didn’t come until November when he finished 2nd. over 8f. Chantilly. Had a good 3-y-o career winning Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club 10.5 G/S Chantilly, Group 2 Prix Niel Longchamp 12f. Very Soft and finishing third to Golden Horn in the Arc. You would think his offspring would need some time.

PEARLSECRET Compton Place - Our Little Secret (Rossini)

    OR 108 RPR 117

Won on his 2-y-o debut at York in October a Maiden over 5.5f. on good ground. As a 3-y-o won at long odds-on at Sandown in the Listed 5f. Scurry Stakes on Soft ground. Third to Sole Power in the 2013 King’s Stand on Good ground. In 2014 was second in Temple at Haydock 5f. Soft and as a
6-y-o won that same race on Good ground. Unlikely to have enough runners to be considered for this but was a speedy racehorse.

PRIDE OF DUBAI Street Cry - Al Anood (Danehill)

    OR —- RPR 112

Winner of 6f.(Good) Group 1 at Caulfield (Aus) standing at Coolmore and has been reported to be popular with breeders and should be well represented.

PRINCE OF LIR Kodiac - Esuvia (Whipper)

    OR 102 RPR 107

Only raced as a 2-y-o, winning a Beverley 5f (G/F) Class Conditions on debut, went on to win the Norfolk at Ascot 5f. Soft. Disappointing in three Group races, then retired.

PROTECTIONIST Monsun - Potineuse (Peintre Celebre)

    OR 120 RPR 122

Won on his 2-y-o debut at Hanover in September 8f. Good. As a 4-y-o won the Group 1 Melbourne Cup.Offspring unlikely to be precocious.

SCISSOR KICK Redoute’s Choice - Back Pass ( Quest For Fame)

    OR —- RPR 115

Australian sprinter, ran second in Group 1 7f. at Rosehill.

SHALAA Invincible Spirit - Ghurra (War Chant)

    OR 116 RPG 120

Very good at two winning Group 2 July Stakes, Group 2 Richmond, Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 1 Middle Park all over 6f. Not seen as a 3-y-o until October when winning Group 3 Bengough at Ascot. Finished his racing career rather disappointingly when 10th. of 13 when joint-favourite for the 6f. Sipco Champion Sprint at Ascot. If he has enough runners could well be among the front-runners for Champion First Season Sire.

TERRITORIES Invincible Spirit - Toronto (Machiavellian)

    OR 119 RPR 119

As a 2-y-o finished second to Gleneagles in a Group 1 at Longchamp 7f. Good. Ran second to Gleneagles (again) in 2015 2000 Guineas. Won Group 1 Jean Prat over a mile at Chantilly. His progeny should do well but might be lacking a little in precocity.

THE GURKHA Galileo - Chintz (Danehill Dancer)

    OR 122 RPR 124

Unraced as a 2-y-o won 2016 French 2000 Guineas on Good ground. Ended his short career with a win in Group 1 Sussex Goodwood 8f. Good/Firm. Standing at Coolmore and seemingly popular with breeders, will have plenty of representatives but will they be sharp enough?

THE LAST LION Choisir - Mala Mala (Brief Truce)

    OR 116 RPR 118

Won Brocklesby on racecourse debut, placed second in Norfolk at Royal Ascot and finished his racing career by taking the Middle Park at 25/1. His youngsters should have plenty of speed.

TWILIGHT SON Kyllachy - Twilight Mistress (Bin Ajwaad)

    OR 115 RPR 120

Won on 2-y-o debut at Salisbury 6f. G/F in August. As a £-y-o ran second in Group Champion
Sprint Ascot 6f. G/S and the following year(2016) won Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Ascot 6f. G/S. Speedy horse who has been busy at stud and his 2-y-os should be winning lots of races.

VADAMOS Monsun - Vadala (Peintre Celebre)

    OR 120 RPR 122

Ran second in both races as a 2-y-o, won 12f. conditions event at Longchampat three, won 8f. Group 2 at Baden-Baden as a 4-y-o and at five won 8f. Group 1 at Chantilly (Good). Stands in Ireland and has been busy, you would think his progeny might need a little time.

    ***********************

I’ve had a look around for prices and I could only come up with this:

FITZDARES - Champion First Season Flat Sire 2020 (Number of individual winners in GB & Ireland - ends 31st. December) ***

*** I find this a touch ambiguous and needs clarification, note also the finishing date.

    MEHMAS 5 >7/2 >5/2
    SHALAA 5/1 > 6/1
    THE GURKHA 5 > 6
    TERRITORIES 6 > 8
    PRIDE OF DUBAI 8 > 10
    TWILIGHT SON 12 > 8
    ADAAY 12 > 16
    AWTAAD 12 > 16
    BELARDO 14 > 12
    ESTIDHKAAR 16 > 20
    PRINCE OF LIR 20
    KODI BEAR 20
    BURATINO 25 > 12
    CHARMING THOUGHT 25
    BOBBY’S KITTEN 33 > 25
    NEWBAY 33
    HARZAND 50
    THE LAST LION 50 > 33
    FASCINATING ROCK 50

I would encourage you to have a look around for other prices. Rackets had a market last year but they don’t have it up yet.

All the early talk seemed to be of Shalaa but it’s hard to discern how many UK/Ire 2yos he’ll have.

Post sales Belardo and Territories seem to get good reviews.

Great to see this thread back.

Met a jockey in Aldi who has ridden a few very nice Mehmas stock already.
    May be ones to watch.

KP has a nice BOBBY’S KITTEN. Looking forward to seeing if it's any good on the track.

Below is a list of FSS from the Return of Mares (November edition) which states the number of mares covered and the number of live foals. Please be careful with these figures. These figures are only an illustration of the ‘usage’ of these sires and their productivity. The reasons for this are that often only UK/Ire based mares are registered and some studs are late to register live foals. French and German based sires will have low figures (if at all) for the above reasons. (I have only included sires who showed they covered more than 40 mares).

ADAAY 122 mares covered; 91 live foals
    AWTAAD 115; 83
    BELARDO 112; 72
    BOBBY'S KITTEN 90; 67
    BURATINO 112; 76
    CHARMING THOUGHT 73; 42
    COULSTY 62; 38
    ESTIDHKAAR 136; 92
    FASCINATING ROCK 87; 55
    HARZAND 87; 57
    KODI BEAR 108; 76
    MARKAZ 104; 74
    MEHMAS 176; 125
    NEW BAY 105; 65
    PEARL SECRET 55; 38
    PRIDE OF DUBAI 137; 100
    SHALAA 53; 49
    TERRITORIES 131; 83
    THE GURKHA 154; 95
    TWILIGHT SON 140; 119
    VADAMOS 167; 107

Illustrative of the problem with these figures is in the figure for Shalaa. Sires standing in France (or elsewhere in Continental Europe) often do not include all the local mares covered by the sire or even UK/Ire mares covered by the sire. My belief is that Shalaa actually covered 158 mares.
However other than that the mares covered figure does give an idea of how many foals there are likely to be, and Mehmas is top of the list. Gutaifan was top of that list last year and finished joint-top FSS.

The 2-y-o season starts at Naas 2.00 tomorrow.

    There are three FSS represented:

BURATINO - The Blue Panther, out of a Marju mare who has produced two useful 7/8f. handicappers.

PRINCE OF LIR - Boosting, o/o an Acclamation mare who has produced nothing of note.

MARKAZ - Marketta, o/o a Foxhound mare, with a useful 6f. handicapper to her name.

A.P. O'Brien was mob-handed for this but only the one Lipizzaner (by Uncle Mo o/o Fastnet Rock mare who has had a smart Group 2 sprinter in Australia) runs.

Aidan over the past three seasons is 5 from 17 for his first time 2-y-os early on. Andrew Slattery (Boosting) and Brendon Duke (Marketta) are others who have an early f.t.o. 2-y-o winner.

The Blue Panther (9 from 12) and Marketta (10 from 14) have shortened overnight Lipizzaner weakened slightly (5/6 from 4/5) - Betfair prices.

Some live foal figures in today’s Racing Post.

    Mehmas has 146
    Belardo 92
    Territories 110
    Buratino 88
    Pride of Dubai 121
    The Gurkha 117
    Vadamos 130
    Twilight Son 122

These are basically in the order of their current RaceBets prices with Mehmas being favourite to have most winners. The sire missing from my list here but bang in the centre of the Racebets prices is Shalaa, whom they agree is difficult to give a number for.

Despite Allagar being a N/R Lipizzaner still weak out to 6/4, must be some money for Forever My Girl (9 from 22).

The early support for Poetic Flare (touched 6/4 before starting as 2/1j) proved correct with the Dawn Approach colt keeping on well from Lipizzaner. The first two looked decent, The Blue Panther did OK on debut, Forever My Girl was slow to pick up and never got into the race after being outpaced early.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few more Uncle Mo's offspring over here. They look hugely talented. That one got a sympathetic introduction today but he really picked up when asked.

GOKEN off the mark with Livachope at Chantilly on Wednesday. The sire had two other runners on the same day suggesting the his babies might well be "early types".

First season sire DARIYAN gets a winner at Lyon with Princesse De Saba.

Of course these winners in France do not count for our Top FSS, just putting them up through boredom.

When racing does get under way in this country the fields are likely to be big and it could be quite time consuming to plough through 20+ runner maidens.
