    The Racing Certainty

This piece by Lydia Hislop so represents what I feel about racing i.e you don't need to bet to enjoy racing. Many's the time I tell people I worked in various racing connected industries or went to a race meeting and then find myself automatically on the defensive saying it's OK I don't bet and people look at me with eyebrows raised. The perception of people who know nothing about racing is that you must be a gambler to like racing and it's not, it's just not !

    True.

It's no different from watching any sport and not having a bet.

I rarely bet on other sports but watch plenty of them.

I've never had a bet on a skiing event but have watched plenty.

Same with some of the big Olympic events.

We do watch many other sports like Golf tennis snooker etc glued to the screen and never think about betting..Some people are hooked on the most bring sport on the planet..Televised Yacht racing it's about as exciting as the Old BBC test card.

Betting has and always will be a part of racing it's how the whole thing started and while those who own train and ride horses may not bet we must be talking about 95% of the rest of us mad punters do.

I hardly ever bet - maybe once a year and then I have to talk myself into it. I just love looking at the beautiful horses, the odd cute jockey(sorry to be a girlie), and wishing I could, just once, experience a ride on a horse like that.

    Pretty much my thinking

Racing is my favourite sport and I could enjoy it without a bet

When i daydream, its of training horses not betting on them
Some people say he’s the best since Arkle and that’s certainly true when you look at what he’s done

Yes me too. I like a good bet and take it seriously as I never have the intention of losing, but it wasn't always that way.

My Godfather trained pointers, and as a little lad I used to think horses could fly because he would stand me next to the schooling fences and they would pretty much soar over me. The memories are still imprinted on my brain today. I love the sport for the sport first and foremost.

This week I'll be happy to see Altior, Buveur D'air, and Tiger Roll confirm themselves as true Champions and I won't have a penny on (apart from in some multiples), and also I'd love to see Faugheen have a glorious swansong in the Stayers. I'll shout myself hoarse up the hill if he's there or thereabouts even against my own bets.

Agree about the not needing to have a bet. The one thing I really look forward to every year is the Supreme & hearing that roar at the "off"

    What Spock would say

Question 1. Could you/would you watch racing without ever having a bet?............Answer: Yes!

Question 2. Do you bet?........Answer: Yes

Question 3. Do you win or lose over the season? Answer I lose

Logically speaking you could enjoy racing without betting but you bet despite losing your balls.........go and see Dr McCoy
