    Cumani to quit

Have to say didn't see that one coming! By far the best trainer I worked for but a complete w*nker to a lot of his staff. Seems like the yard will be put on the market as his son is staying in Australia. That must be a blow.

Nearly as old as me. Hopefully his daughter can keep him in the style to which he's become accustomed.
The older I get the better I was.

That owner with the yellow colours and black spots switching all his horses to Roger Varian, included Postponed, couldn't have helped. The Derby wins were before my time but I used to like it when he had one laid out for The Old Newton Cup, would go off well backed and do the business. He won four Old Newton Cups in total.

An amazing piece in Peter Walwyn's autobiography "Handy All The Way " about Luca.
"Too clever ... a very good trainer ,but he could be described as being so cunning that he does not let his left hand know what his right hand is doing" when mentioning Luca's running of Raykour in a handicap at The Craven meeting before winning The Esher Cup at Sandown, which did not escape the Stewards.
Some man to lay one surely.
His handling of Falbrav a joy; pity about The Dazzler riding him.
I always remember Zaralaska's win at Royal Ascot under Pat Eddery after being apprentice ridden at York, he absolutely hosed up.

He loved the Extel Hcp at Goodwood. I had thought it was that race Raykour went for but my memory is foggy these days!!

Yes it was at Sandown. Remember it now very well. Quite a furore that there was no enquiry after he blatantly wasn't off at Newmarket then seriously backed for the Esher Cup. Stewards almost certainly all on!
