Big shout Grass as there's very little between him and the McCain horse, who's been making hay of late with his runners.

10lb swing compared to when they met earlier in the season where Hughes always looked pretty confident on the second but fell short and with both horses making their seasonal debuts it's hard to know which one stripped fitter. Minella Drama does now have that LTO win in heavy ground too, which comes as no surprise being by Flemensfirth.

If I'm going to bet in it, in this ground I'll probably take the 9/4 about the reversal.

10lbs swing for 5L, Lee, and Llandinabo Lad was going away that day, whilst the McCain horse found nil (I think he looks a bit of a dodge-pot myself).

Since that race, Minella Drama was done what all McCain horses do - beat up utter no-marks, in soft northern novices. Big whoop.

I'm thoroughly confident that LL will confirm the placings - Johnson riding elsewhere, is just the icing on the cake.

Eight runners in the Clarence House. Let's hope it stays that way. I might take a chance on Fanion D'estruval each way.

They've priced Smooth Stepper the outsider of the Peter Marsh field. He's another each way play for me if Haydock is on.

When you have your eye on something and it drifts (in this case from 9/4 to 4/1 apost) if you take a chance and back it the frigger is pulled. I left this alone and he runs now. Not pleased.

Last season Yala Enki won this after placing in the Welsh Nash but the latter event was run on it's correct date then. That alone makes him opposable odds-on.

Agreed, Yala Enki had a hard race just 2 weeks ago.

It would be enough for me not to back him (were I of a mind to) but he's an admirably tough old bugger.

I'm hoping my big price ante post voucher about the Mighty Don for the (nearly) 4 miler is looking a lot better after that Taunton race. He doesn't necessarily need to win to strengthen his chance but it'd be nice.

    Let's hope Haydock is on.

Smooth Stepper shortening all the time. The Venetia Williams horse could well be a cut above the rest but Smooth Stepper is a good one for an each way bet.

I think him and Fanion D'estruval is my each way double for tomorrow.

    Are you near Haydock, Euro?

I've just grabbed the last of the 14s on Smooth Stepper. Fingers crossed.

Marb, you'll be pleased to know Smooth Stepper is on Simon Rowlands's radar and he's recommending a bet on Fanion D'Estruval.

On time ratings - never the most reliable, I admit - I have him only 4lbs behind Shishkin. On form ratings, he's in the 160s.

That would make him the most likely winner of either the RSA or NH Chase, assuming he stays and improves again, and has me worrying about my Galvin bet for the latter, which I never thought would be in jeopardy.

I would go as far as to back him for the Gold Cup if I could get 50/1 NRNB but I'll probably have to wait for that.
    Ain't 50/1 now!

    That was a 170+ performance.

Wouldn't want to peg ratings when the race fell apart going down the back - only dangers pulled up and fell - was left to come away effortlessly from knackered horses who cant win handicaps off their current marks.

He is a horse of huge potential but a Grade 1 would ask very different questions. I would have no fear in suggesting that Monkfish or Latest Exhibition could do the same. Just that Venetia is more sporting for making her horse try.

Ive been very dismissive of him. Im not now, a genuine live chance I feel. Especially if that rain comes.

He goes the Gold Cup, but if for some unknown reason he goes RSA, I wouldn’t be backing Monkfish confidently. Top top hose.

As i side note. Has Rich Ricci sent them anywhere other then Mullins before? Is there a reason Venetia has him?

The story is they were sitting next to each other a couple of years ago and got talking. I think VW asked them if they could send her one and they said if she could find one good enough for them she could train it.

I think the Riccis might have one with PFN?
