    No Nay Never | Coolmore

    By John Berry
When Wesley Ward stunned British race-goers in 2009 with his ground-breaking transatlantic raid which yielded a Royal Ascot double with the 2-year-olds Strike The Tiger (Tiger Ride) and Jealous Again (Trippi), he made it perfectly clear to a European audience that he was a master in identifying and preparing brilliantly precocious 2-year-olds. Such horses are always highly prized for both racing and breeding wherever one goes in the world, so it was only a matter of time before one of his Ascot strike-forces would contain a colt who would stamp himself as an exciting stallion prospect. Roll on four years and that horse revealed himself.
Ward ran three juveniles at Royal Ascot in 2013. The filly Sweet Emma Rose (City Zip) finished an excellent second behind the brilliant Rizeena (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in the G2 Queen Mary S. and Ogermeister (Silver Train) was an also-ran in the Windsor Castle S., but No Nay Never hit the bullseye, winning the G2 Norfolk S. with ease. When this imposing colt went on to take the G1 Darley Prix Morny two months later and then show further top-class sprinting form as a 3-year-old, it was guaranteed that he would be extremely well patronised when he retired to Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 2015. An added bonus was that he was a son of the increasingly popular Scat Daddy (Johannesburg). When Scat Daddy tragically died on Dec. 14, 2015, a further premium was put on No Nay Never’s services.
Under the circumstances, it is no surprise that No Nay Never now stands out as a clear leader of the TDN‘s table of European-based first-season sires, based on total progeny earnings. He has already been represented by 30 individual runners, 14 (46.67%) of whom have won at least one race. Five of his runners have shown black-type form with two of them having won listed races: the Aidan O’Brien-trained Coolmore Pride Of Dubai Tipperary S. winner Land Force (Ire) and the Jessica Harrington-trained Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. victrix Servalan (Ire). It seems likely that No Nay Never will build on this outstanding start and that his success and popularity will continue to grow.
While it was relatively easy to predict that No Nay Never might be in pole position at this early stages of the race for supremacy at stud, it would have been less straightforward to identify Bungle Inthejungle (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) as his closest pursuer. Bungle Inthejungle was a terrific sprinting juvenile, his four victories including hard-fought triumphs over five furlongs in the G3 Molecomb at Goodwood and the G3 Cornwallis S. at Ascot. However, he did not show the Group 1 form displayed by No Nay Never and many others among the 2015 intake of new stallions. Furthermore, he failed to finish in the first three in all of the eight races which he contested subsequent to his rewarding juvenile campaign. Consequently, he commanded a modest fee (€5,000, which was a quarter of the sum charged for the services of No Nay Never) when he retired to Rathasker Stud in 2015 and, while he covered a decent-sized book, in general he was not favoured with mares of the proven class sent to his more vaunted competitors.
Under the circumstances, Bungle Inthejungle can be said to have made an exceptionally good start to his stud career. Nearly half (35) of the 72 named foals which resulted from his first season have already run, and already 16 of them are winners, headed by Sopran Artemide (Ire), winner of the Premio Vittorio Crespi and runner-up in the G3 Premio Primi Passi. The fact that his average earnings per starter are less than half the figure earned by the average son or daughter of No Nay Never tells us nothing more sinister than that he was not generally favoured with patrician mares. Overall, he can be said to be over-performing as a sire when measured against the opportunities afforded to him. One would hope that he will cover a deservedly strong book in 2019 and be able to consolidate this extremely promising start.
The likelihood is that Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) will move past Bungle Inthejungle into second place in the near future. The ball is really starting to roll for the four-time Group 1-winning miler, whose stud career got underway in breath-taking style when Calyx (GB) registered a hugely impressive five-length victory on debut at Newmarket on June 9. Ten days later, Calyx strolled home ahead of his 22 rivals in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, and the G1 Darley Prix Morny currently beckons. Eighteen sons and daughters of Kingman have currently faced the starter, with his four winners also including the Andrew Balding-trained Look Around (GB) whose two victories include an effortless success in the Star S. at Sandown and the John Gosden-trained King Of Comedy (GB) who made an impressive winning debut at the same course on July 6. Kingman has been given every chance to succeed at stud, having started out at Banstead Manor covering a large book of high-class mares at a fee (£55,000) roughly 12 times that being charged for the services of Bungle Inthejungle. On the early evidence so far, Kingman seems unlikely to disappoint the many breeders who have tipped him for stardom.
When Kingman finished second to Night Of Thunder (Ire) in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in 2014, Charm Spirit (Ire)(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) finished roughly three lengths behind him in fifth. Charm Spirit subsequently won the G1 Prix Jean Prat, G1 Qatar Prix du Moulin and G1 QIPCO Queen Elizabeth II S. before retiring to Tweenhills Farm & Stud in 2015 at a fee of £25,000. Like Kingman, he has made a good start to his second career. He is currently lying in fourth position in the European first-season sires’ table, one place behind his old rival. Eleven of his 36 runners have won, including the Richard Fahey-trained Charming Kid (GB), a winner of debut at the York May Meeting before running at Royal Ascot and then finishing third in the G2 Arqana July S. at Newmarket’s July Meeting.
Charm Spirit has spent his stud career so far alternating between Tweenhills in England and Haras De Bonneval in France, where he spent the 2018 season. One place below him in the table is another French-based stallion: Olympic Glory (Ire)(Choisir {Aus}) who stands at Haras de Bouquetot, whither he retired in 2015 at a fee of €15,000 with the hugely creditable record of having scored in Group 1 company at the ages of two, three and four. Such an achievement marked him down as a very interesting young sire and he has duly started well. To date, only 19 of his huge first crop of 104 named foals have run, but seven of them are already winners, headed by the Willie McCreery-trained Listowel winner Mintd (Ire) whose most recent outing saw him finish runner-up to Land Force in the Coolmore Pride Of Dubai Tipperary S.
Any horse who can win Britain’s premier juvenile race, the G1 Darley Dewhurst S., clearly has potential at stud. War Command (War Front) took the race for Aidan O’Brien in 2013, having already taken the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot and the G2 Galileo EBF Futurity S. at The Curragh. With a first-season fee of €15,000, he occupied a lower place on the roster at Coolmore than No Nay Never when both took up stud duties there in 2015, but the start which he has made is nearly as promising. He is currently lying sixth in the table. Ten of his 28 runners have won, including the Mark Johnston-trained four-time winner Victory Command (Ire) who was very impressive at Ascot on Saturday when taking the Pat Eddery S. by two lengths.
The final three stallions in the top 10 of the table are all enjoying good runs of success at present: Garswood (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), Anodin (Ire) (Anabaa) and Slade Power (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}). Garswood did not have as large a first-crop as one might expect of a Group 1-winning sprinter based at Cheveley Park Stud, where sprinting stallions have traditionally been afforded plenty of opportunities. He only had 47 named foals in 2016, but has already been represented by four individual winners headed by the Karl Burke-trained Little Kim (GB), the winner of two races including the G3 Prix du Bois over 1000m at Deauville.
Anodin too has already had a stakes winner, which is good for a stallion whose stock in general look sure to progress as they mature. Having been well supported at Haras du Quesnay at a first-season fee of €7,500 in 2015, he has already been represented by five individual winners headed by the Christophe Ferland-trained Harmless (Fr) who took the Prix Roland de Chambure at Longchamp on Bastille Day. Anodin’s other winners include the English-trained colts Julius Limbani (Ire) and Goldino Bello (Fr), successful at Sandown and Newmarket, respectively.
As one would expect from a horse who completed the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. /G1 Darley July Cup double (in 2014), Slade Power was well supported when he retired to Kildangan Stud in 2015 at a fee of €20,000. His seven individual winners include the Godolphin home-bred Strings Of Life (GB), successful for Charlie Appleby on debut at Newmarket before finishing runner-up in the Empress S. there.
Gregorian (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) and Moohaajim (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) currently occupy promising positions just outside the top 10, while another young stallion worthy of praise is Kuroshio (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) whose sole season at Overbury Stud in 2015 (at a fee of £3,500) yielded merely 17 named foals. Already 14 of them have run, with five having won including the Wolverhampton winner Daphinia (GB) who finished second in the Langleys Solicitors British EBF Marygate Filles’ S. at York and Dunkerron (GB), successful at Windsor and York before finishing fourth in the G2 Arqana July S. at Newmarket.
It would be no surprise to see Kuroshio, who did not return to the UK for the 2016 season, be brought back now that he is going so well. He is definitely a horse to keep an eye on–which comment, obviously, also applies to the mighty Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) whose Classic season in 2014 saw him take the G1 Investec Derby, the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and the G1 Juddmonte International. One would not expect him to come up with too many early-season juvenile winners, so it is very encouraging that he is currently lying in 14th position in the table with three individual winners headed by the Charlie Appleby-trained Beyond Reason, successful on June 6 in a novices’ race at Kempton and on Saturday in the G3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville.

Beyond Reason (Australia ex Azamour mare) won the group 3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville Saturday for Godolphin/ Charles Appelby.

Who was the last Group winner for Godolphin by a Coolmore sire ?

This may be as significant as Hatta's Molecomb Stakes win in 1977.

it would be very interesting to know exactly which FSS made the most profit at BFSP'S at the end of the season, im sure there would
be lots of useful information to be gleaned. maybe something to think about for next year.

With the help of Adrian Massey's excellent site I have come up with:

    BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE Bets 80 Wins 13 Stake 8000 Returns 7242. 70 P/L -757.30 % Returns90.5

    CHARM SPIRIT 64 --- 12 --- 6400 ---12,774.70 --- 6374.80 --- 199.6

    NO NAY NEVER 66 --- 15 --- 6600 --- 7617.50 ---1017.50 --- 115.4

    WAR COMMAND 55 --- 11 ---5500 --- 6068.40 --- 568.40 --- 110.3

The above are all to NO COMMISSION.

If you want me to put in commission I can do that, just let me know.

As the season goes on there will be more sires because the site doesn't recognise a sire until it has recorded 10 wins.

    Hope that helps.
