I think the amounts that she bet is a red herring. It's like comparing a $10 whore with a $1000 'escort.' One you establish a principle all that's left is the price.

Question: If this exact situation arose with one of the pantomime villains (say RMcLernon) rather than the sweet little media princess would opinions adjust?

I don't see the a problem unless they are betting against themselves.

From an overall perspective, the rules are black and white; there are no grey areas (and nor should there be) for jockeys 'making a comeback' etc. She breached the rule and will be punished accordingly.

From a perception perspective, I don't necessarily think the amount is a red herring (and I want it placed on the record that I have no knowledge whatsoever of the industry to which you have drawn a comparison...), particularly for someone like her. The other thing that would be interesting to know would be exactly what horses she was punting.

Having a score on Grade 1's or big Saturday handicaps is (or would certainly appear) a lot different than if she were having £500 on Michael Bell horses in Class 5 handicaps at Leicester. From what I've seen it looks like carelessness on her part (she certainly wasn't punting large amounts).

If she was to be fined accordingly it would be £164 or whatever the amount of her profit was.

What did they decide about the horses?

The way it transpired her opening an account in her own name making no attempt to hide it is a bit different than ****** having 20 punters in his pocket and nothing gets done about it.

There are faces on every racecourse every day punting for some Jockey or Trainer and they seldom get pulled if ever.

This is a somewhat odd case with no malice intended. A 25,000 fine which this more or less is, is a joke

I got quite annoyed listening to this self-obsessed young woman whingeing about the verdict. 3 months is the entry level suspension so she should realise how lucky she is. Stupidity is no excuse particularly when you set yourself up as an example to female jockeys who by the way, famously ducked out of the charity meeting at Carlisle solely for women jockeys because she had a better offer at Windsor.
She said that she was only backing in fivers and tenners yet it appears the turnover on the account was £3000 so a bit more than your casual novice weekend punter. I'd like to see ITV keep her off the screens for that suspension period and Ed Chamberlin to come out and say what a good example ITV are setting.

Incorrect Archie -164 bets -the average bet was something like €18.30 -casual punter territory in my view.Rest assured Hayley will not be on ITV for the duration of the ban.

    164 x 18.30 = 3001.20.

An average bet of £18.30 does not equate to betting in fivers and tenners.

What a waste of time. Slap on wrist was all that was needed.

    Silly ban.

Does it elevate her to non casual punter status.

It elevates her way above my punting level and, no, I wouldn't class her as a casual punter.

Archie, Did Hayley cost you a few pound in the past? Or maybe turned down your advances?? It's quite clear you have a personal dislike for her.

It's a complete nonsense of a ban with no common sense applied at all.

If you compare it with the recent David Evans / Ladbrokes case it really is of virtual insignificance. Just a silly unimportant lapse whilst the other case was an utter disgrace which really did bring racing into disrepute.

    From the RP timeline:
    2016

March 17 Licence expires so betting no longer prohibited
June 23 Turner reapplies for licence and confirms she is familiar with any changes to the rules of racing
July6 Receives notification her licence has been renewed. Places bets later that day and on the next two days

Totally agree with Archie. She new exactly what she was doing and exactly what the consequences would be. I'm genuinely surprised anyone thinks the outcome is wrong in any way.

It just seems the punishment is out of line with recent cases esp. David Evans.
