    Cheltenham Festival 2018 Antepost Bets

I thought it might be an idea to get this thread up good and early this year. There have been plenty of gems on it in previous years, and I must admit I generally like trawling through it for ideas of antepost value. I can't see a thread for it yet, and we usually get started on this when we hit November.

I had made a vow last year that I wasn’t going to get heavily involved in antepost multiples because it was pretty much carnage, and would focus only on win bets for trading purposes. However, as you’ll see from my bets so far I've only stuck to half of that

As much as my head was telling me leave the antepost multiples alone, my heart was saying it’s the Festival so get stuck in, and I’ve been doing so since early September. The truth is there looked to be some really obvious ones that I wanted onside early, and as I was doing a thorough trawl of the prospects for this season I added some slightly more speculative ones. I also covered a couple off that have the clear possibility of running in a couple of races, by doubling up. The bottom line is I like my position on the singles for trading purposes, but I’m probably more heavily invested in the multiples at this stage than I should be, although there's nothing that looks staggeringly wrong.

Clearly several multiples will fall over pre-Festival with connections changing targets and horses suffering, setbacks, etc, but I accept that. It’s part of the game. What I hope for is enough multiples at bigger odds still in play come mid-March to feel as though I can land some nice ones. Much of which rests with four or five key horses as you'll see below.

By comparison, I placed a dozen multiple antepost bets last year and only two were still in play at the Festival. Surely lightening can't strike twice! But looking back it was a bit of a freak year, and generally I’d have half or more in play come Festival week. This year I have twenty multiples done already, and I’m sure to add more as the season unfolds, so fingers crossed the main players turn up fit and well.

The other reason I want to get them on here now is because it’s useful to have them all in one place. I’ve already doubled up on a couple of bets that I hadn’t intended to because of using multiple accounts. I'm generally pretty disciplined with things like that so getting this thread up seemed like a good idea.

Anyway, comments are welcome with regards individual selections (I'll be trading the win parts of bets out across the season), and multiples will obviously run all the way through assuming they don't fall over. Happy to take any criticism with regards to whether you feel my position is crazy this early, or whether you think overall I'm in a decent place.

Obviously feel free to add your own antepost Festival selections now and as the season unfolds.

Cause of Causes X-Country, currently 7/1 with Hills
Yorkhill to win any race, 6/1 with Hills

Is a double that should look good come March

Almost all of my ante-post multiples include Might Bite in the King George, so they won't qualify until 26th December.

Best of the Singles at this stage is probably Great Field each-way for the Champion Chase at 25/1.

Great Field at 25's is a cracking good bet Nick. The best I managed was 12's late September I think.

I like that double as well Lee, particularly as Yorkhill has been troubling me. Any race is definitely a good option. In fact I'm a bit annoyed that I didn't think of it.

I've got Might Bite for the King George in a £30 treble with Buveur D'Air, and Altior at the Festival to win just short of 1k Nick. Strikes me as a really nice bet. I might add one or two more closer to Christmas.

I have a three-figure wager about Might Bite at 33/1 for the King George, struck around 3rd January 2017. He will make or break my Xmas.

Not really relevant for this thread though.

As I've been out of action for a while and missed all of last season and the good majority of the season before I have literally diddly squat for this year but I used to only have 2 types of Antepost bet for Cheltenham the type where they got ruled out of the race 30 seconds after I'd placed the bet or I'd get 200/1 about something that turned up favourite on the day and then obliged to run like a bag of crap and finish last. Ah good times, good times

Good luck lads and may you have better luck than I.

Not my usual style, DO, which is a bit Death-or-Glory where these long-distance efforts are concerned.

Any breakage will be psychological rather than financial!

Actually I tell a lie .... there was a third type once upon a time. I started betting into a Doumen Horse just before Christmas for the triumph hurdle all prices down from 33/1 into favouritisim. The horse? Hors la loi III which was leased to Pipe the week before the festival and promptly obliged to win the Supreme Novices by a distance, in a time if I recall about a 1 second slower than Istabraq won the champion hurdle. I was only a kid and was broke on the day ended up with a fiver on it having had around £75 e/w ( about 4 weeks YTS money ) on it for the triumph.

    Good times, good times.

I'm sworn off Ante Post for the Festival, but every rule needs breaking so have backed Cause of Causes at 10's, 8's and still topping up at the current 7-1

That's it for me on this thread until NRNB

I've only done a treble on Altior, Buveir Dair and Might Bite, pays just over 100/1.
I've been stung too may times Ante Post to get any more involved.
