I don't know what the surface was, perhaps a mixture of sand and cinders, but it was in a public space and was not regularly maintained. I'm not sure it was used at all by that time, they might have just run their horses on the grass, like everyone else. The grass was kept under control by the thousands of cattle who summered in the Park and by the permanent herd of deer.

Hundreds of other horses from hacking stables used the Park every day, with the result that the routes to and from the Acres were as bad as a ploughed field most of the time. It was not an easy place to be training racehorses.

Racing Post was published for the first time today, twenty nine years ago, in 1986.

How much longer will it last ?

And there was me thinking that in 1947 the winter was so severe that the whole of Britain and Ireland was under 25 ft of snow until the end of July

And Busted must have won the Coronation Stakes, trained by Noel Murless and ridden by George Moore. (sorry about aftertiming).

A good day's racing with one really good horse almost bowing out and another great horse announcing his arrival on the big stage. Tough horse Busted: later in the season he won both the Eclipse and King George on consecutive Saturdays.
