    BLOODSTOCK and BREEDING 2012

Thought we might kick off the new year with a separate thread, if that's okay?

As noted on the old thread, January 1st saw a half-sister arrive to NATIVE KHAN. No problem remembering that birthday, then.

    .

    Their attempt at marketting ?!

I think Kutub will get plenty of support from NH breeders.

Starting to consider my options of this season with two Teofilos due to arrive and an Iffraaj from one of the mares in hand. Stallion shopping is such a sodding mine field.
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything.

Do you have a short list or do you want to keep it under your hat ?

Not even a vague notion never mind a shortlist yet - one is not my call (foal share arrangement, the Teo is mine and it's their call this time around). The other...what do you do with a Danehill x Fairyking mare? Has an Iffraaj yearling and due to Teo. Best previous best foal was by Celtic Swing (!)

Saw him last year and wasn't overly impressed - might be worth another trip now he's had a chance to mature. Vaguely considering sending her to the US to visit Scat Daddy (assuming she'd get pedigree approved for his book)

ETA: I'd go to Shamardal before Lope De Vega too, but for the price.

SHAMARDAL showing @ Euros 50,000. Those above him in price (in Euros):

SEA THE STARS @ 85,000; DANEHILL DANCER and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT @ 60,000.

The ones I see "on application" must be well supernova: AZAMOUR, DALAKHANI, DASHING BLADE, FASTNET ROCK, GALILEO, MONSUN, MONTJEU, RODERIC O'CONNOR, SINNDAR, SIYOUNI and SOVIET STAR.

Rodders is 9k as per his stud card.
    Azamour is 15k.
    Dalakhani is 40k.
    Sinndar is 9.5k
    Siyouni is 7k.

The others are indeed private/on application.

Cheers, Miesque - those are not the least bit supernova! When it's POA, can we assume it's five large? What I haven't seen yet is an advert for a sire saying 'strictly limited book' - is it a free-for-all this season?

I know of two who have closed books already (indeed one had closed prior to Christmas!) so perhaps it's a case of stud discretion rather than touted policy?

As to POA - not always. It depends who and what the mare is...and who she belongs to in a lot of cases.

What do you breeding buffs think of Roderic O'Connor as a stallion?

I saw him at the Guineas and he was very small.

He is very small, I think 9k is more than I'd pay for him. It's a cheaper way of getting access to those Galileo/Danehill bloodlines but I'd prefer to use Teo.

Must be my eyes,I was expecting Rod to be a small horse but I didn't see a small horse. I was only looking so I didn't stand into him.Mind you they'd all look small with J O' B on board. I liked him.

I was kind of thinking in the iffraaj price range that's why I didn't mention Shamardal. Have you seen Intense focus ?

Kri I think I saw frozen power is 'limited' to 125 mares

He's quite nicely put together but in the Guineas Paddock he was noticeably smaller than the others. I should think he is less than 15'2. He did look like a pony amongst horses. I may be wildly wrong mind.

This is what I said after the Guineas. My thoughts might have been a bit fresher then:

"I would not want to be backing either Roderic O'Connor or Pathfork. Both looked small, as if they hadn't really progressed from last season. In particular Roderic O'Connor who really is tiny. I would be very surprised to see him taking a hand in any major races this season since he seemed to lack any scope whatsoever. I seem to remember him being small last season, but clearly he hasn't grown and his lack of stature was more pronounced now his contemporaries have progressed."

Pathfork has yet to be seen since and, apart from Roderic O'Connor winning a really poor Irish 2000 Guineas, I think I was about right.

25-ish on paper is ok. Maybe more if the Teo is exceptional this year. Saw Intense Focus last year but I don't think the GC line would suit this mare (she's smaller and a bit butty). The Iffraaj is correct but not my cup of tea, she's very much a sprint type, unsurprisingly, and isn't want I aim to breed.

I think the most PC phrase I heard of Rodders was "not much frame to grow into"....

I liked him physically although he lacks a bit of length of rein and tends to the GC butty-ness. He moves well though. Not seen any of his that have caught my eye.

Sheikh, hmm... limited, schlimited! A few years back the 'limited book' was more like 80!
