Looking back through my files, the last to scrape into the race last year was Born By The Sea, which was entry #67/79/OR143 at publication of the weights.

There's a handful more qualifiers this time (87) so I imagine something around the #70 mark (OR142) could be hopeful.

Time to start on some preliminary study...

Assuming the Irish trainers will withdraw hardly any of their entries above that mark?

    I suppose that's a possibility.

I did wonder before the Hennessy (whoops, Coral Gold Cup) if Henderson had got Dusart back to anywhere near his best, but he was pulled up having been prominent for a long way until he gradually faded away after the fifth last. Post race, I wondered what an earth Henderson could do with him now and the National entry was a bit of a surprise. If he runs and Henderson has got him back, he’d not be without a chance - but I thought that before the Hennessy, too

The race has lost all it's Aura as far as I'm concerned, just another staying handicap these days.

Hendo only has three entries. Dusart is sure to get in, Fantastic Lady, who has course experience, might struggle to do so and Mister Coffey is very unlikely. I wouldn't touch Dusart myself until there's some kind of positive sign, eg a run at the festival. I think the Scottish National is more likely a target.

Just looking at the weights,I reckon Elliott will have a maximum of 12 and Mullins maybe eleven.

The Daily Telegraph has highlighted today that Monbeg Genius is owned by Baroness Mone. I wasn’t sure but checked and the horse runs in the name of Barrowman Racing. Michelle Mone’s husband is of course Doug Barrowman so the story stacks up.

One wonders why Monbeg Genius would be permitted to run while the Baroness and her husband remain under investigation for fraud when BraveMansGame wasn’t permitted to run at Aintree last year while John Dance was similarly under investigation

Most people have probably forgotten the Owen Paterson Randox scandal but it might re emerge if a horse connected to Mone and her husband wins the race. The last thing the race needs is even more bad publicity.
