Great news about Frodon. He has been around for years 8th in a Triumph Hurdle in 2016. Totally deserved his occasional visit to the top table, as well.

Very sad. A good horse who became a very good horse after a wind op. He lost a few races running out of gas, including that KG when Silvi chased him down. He deserved a Gold Cup too.

A true great. 4-time festival winner. Always gave his all, and so pleased connections knew when to retire the lovely boy.

Yes, you’re both right, apologies. There is no *intention* to cause pain and distress to a horse (and, rightly, any horrified owner would take me to task on that), but we won’t deny that pain and...

The “cruelty” of the sport to my mind lies in an equine life ending [sometimes in painful circumstances], because humans have decided to breed that horse as a means to service their entertainment. It...

Thank you to all of you for your considered responses. I’m still conflicted, and will probably have to live with that. I’m not usually one for double standards, but I can accept this one, I think. I...

It has actually been quite distressing to read this thread. Please answer this question honestly: does the joy you derive from watching horse racing - and experiencing the thrill of an occasional...

One of my real favourites over the years, and finally won his festival race at 13. RIP, Croco.

Great horse, and we'll never know how great a hurdler he might have been - his 2014 season suggested he was very good. But he was a proper chaser anyway, and glad he has been retired in good health.

And Golden Cygnet didn't actually run in a CH, so wasn't actually tested. Bird's Nest might be a good shout as the best horse not to win a CH - rated 176.

Pretty sure Cheltenham did take action after we lost so many at one festival. I think they have always had a policy of watering since that fatal year, just to ensure safe jumping and landing ground.

Just happy that he retired in one piece. Wonderful memories - I shed genuine tears when he won last season's QMCC.

I've just been reminded that he won his three festival races by 6,15, and 6 lengths. That was some horse.

A seasonal favourite, and so consistent. He won "that" Supreme in 2011.

And ends his career with a win! Lovely horse and fondly remembered, by me, for winning a CH at 10/1 in 2012. I'd followed him all season that season, and he did well to serve it up to the Fly the...

He had a cracking 1997-98 season, progressing from handicapper to King George winner and Gold Cup favourite. Lovely horse.
