The first race meeting I ever went to was at the Phoenix Park in 1973.
I can remember very little of it other than George McGrath won the first race on a horse trained by Kevin Prendergast.

I noticed on Twitter the following tweets from Jonathan Powell.
"So sorry to hear that Bob (RA) Davies has died. An entertaining character, he was so proud to win a hurdle race at Ascot on Pendil...
Bob Davies along with Terry Biddlecombe, Ron Barry, Paul Kellaway, Bill Smith and Richard Pitman were the marquee jockeys when I started watching racing in the early seventies.
And mine too.
RIP both Barney Curley and Joe Mercer.
I was that too. Does his family have any interest in racing or bloodstock?
I once had the pleasure of speaking to Peter Casey at Leopardstown.
He was great craic.
