On this day in 1980 Sonny Somers won at Lingfield aged 18
i remember it well.
What a star.
on the 4th March 1967 Persian War won the Victor Ludorum Hurdle at Haydock. The question then was whether he, as a 4yo, went for the Champion Hurdle or waited a month to go for the Triumph Hurdle. The decision was the latter.
I never realised his owner could be so patient ; he made up for it later though.
On this day nineteen years ago a foal destined to be a Dual-Derby winner, eight-time champion sire and father of 63 Group 1 winners was born. It's name was to be Galileo.
On this day in 1977 Charlotte Brew became the first woman jockey to ride in the Grand National on Barony Fort which fell at the 27th fence.

On this day in 1960 the Hennessy Gold Cup was run at Newbury for the first time and was won by Knucklecracker trained and ridden by Derek Ancil.
On this day in 2004 Florida Pearl, ridden by Richard Johnson, ran his last race. winning the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown for a record fourth time. It was his ninth Grade 1 success.
Brave Inca and Pizarro won the Grade 1 Novice hurdle and chase that day and Mac's Joy won the handicap hurdle off 117, but was disqualified and placed second.
