Cheltenham Odds: Chances Still High For McManus To Become Leading Owner

Rate this Entry
Despite the fact that he withdrew three of his handicap runners, namely De Name Escapes Me, Ivanovich Gorbatov and Jezki, the latest Cheltenham odds are still in favour of owner JP McManus. McManus said his team wasn't pleased about how the cross-channel handicapper has taken care of these runners in relation to the other Irish geldings.

Ivanovich Gorbatov, former victor of the Triumph Hurdle, had been one of the entries for the County Hurdle while Jezki, former champion of the Champion Hurdle, would have been a participant in the County or Coral Cup. De Name Escapes Me was initially scheduled to participate in the Coral Cup too. Without them, Buveur D’Air, the current Champion Hurdler, will be the head of McManus’ team in the Cheltenham Festival.

Despite three geldings out of McManus’ team, he continues to be strong against his competitor Michael O’Leary for the honour of becoming the leading owner of Cheltenham. The award was initially granted for the last two years, with O’Leary bagging both on top of coming as out as the winner seven times in 2018. But even though O'Leary has 26 wins, the title of the leading owner in the entire history of Cheltenham Festival races is still likely to be gained by McManus, who has 54 wins.

McManus still holds a 4-7 shot at being the leading owner in a couple of ante-post lists with several ante-post favourites such as Champ and Defi Du Seuil.
