Apache Gold Goes Country ( with apologies to Johnny Cash)

Rate this Entry
I am the proud part owner of a racehorse; his name is Apache Gold
Apple of Jackson Kiely's eye ever since he was a foal
When spotted by Jackson, who thought he would make a racehorse
And the pleasure he has given has been well worth the cost.

Now when Jackson first saw Apache , he was in a field near Doneraile
On a farm owned by Michael Duane in a place called Ballintlea
And that is where Jackson had his horse racing dream
But to embark on that journey, first he had to select a team

So he formed a syndicate with Michael Duane and with Paudy Murphy too
Pat Dennehy and Michael Doody, Paddy Mehigan to name a few
Along with Dernot Kiely, who is jackson's son
Art O'Malley and yours truly, who had to join in the fun.

Well we got him handicapped with Patrick Flynn then we won a race with Postman Pat
We have won five more with John Joe Walsh but I fear that's the end of that
He won in Tipperary, he won in Gowran Park
But Apache's favourite racecourse with four victories is Cork

He has had twenty three different jockeys, six have won on him a single time
Patrick O'Donnell and Damien Melia, Niall McCullagh and Donnacha O' Brien
Connor King and Rory Cleary, and they've all been very nice
But we could never find a jockey who could win on him twice.

He has raced over six flat seasons, faced the starter over sixty times
And though he is just a little horse, his heart was big as a giant's
and he was always fit and healthy, he never needed a vet
He never coughed, nor had colic; he never took a lame step.

He was the talk of Talking Horses, he had his own Facebook page
And all the presenters on At The Races of Apache they sang in praise
They liked that he was honest, that he was ground versatile
And has been so consistent from six furlongs to a mile

Now that is so far the story, a story I am glad I have told
About a big bearded men named Jackson and a little horse Apache Gold
Three cheers for the members of Ballintlea Syndicate
And three cheers for Apache, his story ain't over yet.

I'm a part owner of a racehorse, his name is Apache Gold....

Hearing that sung was one of the highlights of this year's Cheltenham
