Anyone watch £50 Says you'll watch this... on C4 last night ?

It was a programme Presented by Hardeep Singh Kohli and it was supposed to unearth gambling culture in this country.

I got halfway through and the Mrs turned over to watch a film (American President) so was it any good, did he blow the whole 7k?

It was OK. He's an enthusiastic presenter, and the meeting with the guy with boobs was good.

He seemed a little bit small time though, 7k isn't really a lot to go jetsetting arund the world on, gambling. It's on again tonight, so i shall probably watch again.

It was a bit pants really. I didn't learn anything new and I doubt he did either. He had a good laugh along the way though.

I thought it was ok but the programme still seemed to carry the stigma of the "gambling addict" with it. Funnily enough I had a discussion on a similar subject last night in the pub with a load of lads. Gambling still provokes a lot of prejudice from people and anyone who enjoys a punt tends to get pigeonholed as an addict. It also still seems to be viewed by many as a serious vice (which of course it can be for many but not by any means for all) and is frowned upon by a lot of people. This programme didn't do a lot IMO to allay that idea.

I don't get why there's such a stigma or should be such a stigma surrounding gambling and in particular horse and dog racing.

We used to have plenty of young women come into our bookies to do the Irish Lottery who given half a chance would soon seperate themselves from the 40+ year old men and pensioners who've been coming in since before I was born. It's all gambling and as such you can WIN aswell as lose.

A good idea for the programme and taking bets on the egg and spoon race to my mind proved that it's not just the betting shop dwellers who like a gamble it's everyday folk - a total cross section of society. Gambling in itself isn't a bad thing it's the addiction that people have negative feelings towards, I mean how many people who frown upon betting on football, racing, rugby play the lottery? I'd bet it's most of them.

Having watched the usual nannying about the proposed super-casino and rash of other smaller ones about to get licensed in the UK, I didn't bother with this and I'm glad I didn't. This country's incapable of bringing in any change without an immediate rush to the bad news, pre-criticism, pre-judgment. You have alcoholics, and people who like a drink three times a year and teetotallers; you have people wrecking their lives through smoking far too much and others who will never smoke; you've got speed freaks who'll probably eventually blast their car into a tree and kill themselves and other drivers who won't exceed the speed limits, ever; you've got people who will make themselves grossly obese with all of the snacks and chocolates possible, and others who eat sparingly... jeez, like we need more nannying over gambling!

OF COURSE there will be people who'll overdo it, but to baldly assume it will turn its customers into addicts is as dumb as saying people issued credit cards will necessarily go mad and overspend into thousands of pounds' worth of debt they can never repay. But, equally, there will be thousands for whom the casinos and other forms of gambling will be a social occasion, and who won't ever become addicts.

I just wish we could get more of a grip on reality and perspective when gambling's mentioned.
