Burgundy Boy a winner for RED JAZZ at Roscommon yesterday.

It has to be said that this year's crop of first season sires appear to be sub-standard. Personally speaking, I am very disappointed with the Dawn Approach offspring, haven't seen a decent one yet!

    Today's pile of crap:

    Wolverhampton 2.55

CAMELOT - Odds On Olli Richard Fahey 8/1 > 11/1

    Pontefract 2.10 (nursery)

SOCIETY ROCK - Shaheen John Quinn 4/1

    Brighton 5.45

SOCIETY ROCK - El Borracho Simon Dow 20/1 > 25/1
DAWN APPROACH - Daffrah James Tate 16/1

Godolphin have a very smart Dawn Approach but it's still a bit weak. I suspect he will be like Nathaniel last year in that his progeny need time and the better ones will be out backend of the year. Then do better next season as 3yos.

Perhaps so, Flame, but he was very precocious himself winning the first race of the season in his 2-y-o year.

But we did have an especially good year last year so it rather colours feelings. As Flame says some of them may come through as 3yos.

The Pentagon was a very easy winner at the Curragh yesterday winning by over eight lengths, he was supported from 6/1 into an SP of 9/2, with his stablemate Bond Street an uneasy favourite back in third. In his only previous outing The Pentagon (10/1) finished sixth beaten 19 lengths by Verbal Dexterity. Improvement from first to second run is to be expected but it seems to me that this yard has an an exceptional number of runners that make exceptional improvement after their first outing.

I had a look at the numbers.

    Aidan O'Brien's 2-y-o in Ireland 2017.

    First time out runners - 32 winners -2 6.2% %age return 39.1
    Second run 21-9-42.9%- 102.1%

    Is this situation acceptable?
Should Irish racing do something about it?
Ah! but a man's reach should exceed his grasp......

The exposed Actress' victory yesterday looks another nail in the coffin for the Coventry form, apart from Headway who finished 2nd and hasn't ran since the the first 4 out of 5 home plus Denaar for Richard Hannon who finished 11th have all been gubbed since.
The Phoenix should tell us a lot, Cardsharp v Beckford possibly.

Aiden O Brien can have a different approach each year as to how wound up his two olds are first time out.
He is forever adapting his modus operandi from what I see.
This year is his worst for some time .
Other years he would have the late Spring weather to blame but things could not have been better this year on the weather front.

Fair comment, but Rajasinghe ran with a 3lb penalty. He also looked to be crying out for 7-8f already. I'd wait and see on him.

Don't know how Headway measures up against Learn by Heart (Flame mentioned them together in a gallop pre-Royal Ascot). I liked LbH's last run as he didn't seem to pull like some Frankels. In fact he looked pretty lazy. At the moment he doesn't appear front rank though.

I think LBH wants a trip. the difference is Headway is very workmanlike at home, so it's probably not a good guide to LBH ability.

Anyone watching Jim Bolger interview on ATR today would not give up on Dawn Approach's stock yet.
Says he has eleven, ten of whom are fillies but are easy to work with and is pleased with them with a better ratio of colts for 2018.
Sorry he ran today's winner against colts before today but felt she was up for it.
    time will tell.
