On this day in 1878 Craven Stakes first run; Thurio winning from Sefton. The runner up won The Derby so the race got its reputation as a Derby trial.

In 1978 John Francome was banned until the end of NH season and fined £750 over the "John Banks" incident, giving information to a bookie who at one time employed John McCririck and owned Gay Future after his famous win at Cartmel.

On this day in 1939 13yo Brienz won a handicap chase at Cardiff. He had been third in The Derby to Trigo 10 years previously.
Reminds me of Duke Of Dollis who had the misfortune of running in a 2yo maiden in Leopardstown in 1981, beating all except Golden fleece and Assert.
He was running in North Of England in late 1980s in lesser handicaps. A college pal of mine always backed bar 2 occasions when he won at 20/1 and 25/1 one summer.

Jenny Pitman and brother in law Michael Bowlby were cleared by Jockey Club of any wrong doing over the running of Golden Freeze in Cheltenham Gold Cup where he "unsettled" Carvills Hill. The hearing concluded that tactics used were legitimate and horse run to his merits.
You may remember in the run up to Gold Cup 1992 CH looked invincible with wins in Rehearsal Chase, Welsh GN and Vincent O Brien GC. The Racing papers ran features asking various personalities how best to beat CH at Chel;; to a person they suggested Golden Freeze as the horse to harass CH at each fence...parade ring pre race jockey P Scudamore looked a very unhappy bunny going out on CH. GF harassed CH and the rest is history.
On reviewing the race Ted Walsh, commentator assistant trainer to his father who sold GF to Pitmans summarised GF as an "up and down " type of horse and Bowlby as an "up and down type of jockey"!

28/04/1886 Ormonde wins 200Gns from Minting in what is considered one of the best races of the 19th century en route to Triple Crown victory. Minting's trainer could not accept the defeat and was reported to have taken to bed for a week afterwards. Minting won Grand Prix De Paris next start, far away from Ormonde who remained unbeaten in all 16 starts.

28/04/1984 Special Cargo wins dramatic Whitbread Gold Cup from Lettoch and Diamond Edge in a finish of short heads; an absolutely cracking race.

Diamond Geezer, then on that same day a 4yo colt called Busted won his first race for Noel Murless (we didn't know then quite what was to follow). The race is now called the Sir Gordon Richards Stakes, think it was something like the Coronation stakes then.
    Quite a card!

1769 "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere " was the cry when Eclipse won at Epsom by a furlong, too far in front for the other horses to be officially placed.

1979 One In A Million became the first classic winner owned by a company when winning 1000 Gns .

2009 Sea The Stars (remember him 2yrs pre Frankel) wins 2000 Gns in the style of a good horse. The jury is still out as to how good !
