The Road To The 2013 Grand National

Entries close today and weights announced on Feb 14th, no doubt many won't be running now until after then to protect their mark. One of the conditions is a horse must finish in the first three in a chase so Imperial Commander and Hunt Ball achieved that on Saturday and it sounds as if NTD is seriously thinking of running the Commander. Also Little Josh who has won a race over those fences fell on Saturday so will be looking to put that right pretty soon I imagine.

    Any fancies early doors ?

The market leaders all look solid for a change. I still think Chicago Grey has a nice race in him.

Prince De Beauchene 16/1 - I see him going off single figure fav if he gets there

Always Waining 66/1 - backed him for the last 2 Nationals only for him to be pulled out and win the consolation race - maybe this year?

Forpadytheplasterer 50/1 is tempting; has won his 3mile chase and now needs a pipe opener over hurdles to be all set.

Diamond Geezer, is the link to the betting you have provided based on the entries? You say there has been an entry system today, I'm a bit confused.

I've not given up on Alfie Spinner who's not listed in the betting, and view him as a possible rookie dark horse if he were to be entered and run. I don't mind following him off a cliff until end of the season, he's entered in both the National Trials at Ffos Las and Haydock.

Why should Ruby opt for PDB rather than On His Own?

Chris Cook of The Guardian has made a prediction of what the weights would be if allocated today

Following the publishing of the 84 Grand National entrants yesterday, I've had a rough stab at guessing what the weights would be if set now, using Phil Smith's patented formula of compressing the gaps among the topweights. The actual weights will be published on Tuesday 12th Feb.

Bear in mind that some of these are going to run again before the weights are set, which would move them up or down. More importantly, bear in mind that the handicappers will make a rather more professional job of this than I will. In particular, the French horse (Odysseas) and the Irish horses who have not yet run in Britain are tricky to assess but I've formed a quick view of where they might be placed in the handicap.

Do you fancy any of these in particular at these weights? And have I made any obvious howlers?

Colbert Station is the one I'll be looking for first when the real weights are revealed.

Over the next few days it might be worth keeping an eye on the ones needing an improved mark to get into the race.

Good point D.O. I heard some really positive reports about PDB but having studied both horses I have to admit the profile of O.H.O looks the more likely
