Hello everyone. I've already been made to feel welcome (thanks!), but for anyone who was thinking I'd be a useful source...

I have no direct involvement with horses. I'm a punter. And not a very good one. I got started on a cold day in Leeds, where I sheltered unwisely in a shop which happened to contain lots of ashtrays and a small stage, where a bloke in a tank-top was scribbling on the wall. I put a pound on Strands of Gold (Scudamore aboard) in what must have been the 1988 Hennessy Gold Cup, which got me eight quid and a frustrating hobby. The RP archive reckons it went off at 10/1, so I was picking short prices even then, unless I got done on the tax.

I've gradually worked my way down from a fog ticket at Wetherby to a season ticket at Sandown, and have nothing but admiration for all the people, talent and effort that go into keeping the sport alive. Somehow it seems to get better every year.

That said, it's nothing without the horses, and I'm one who thinks Baracouda is about the most impressive I've ever seen. If only because I never won a bet on Desert Orchid.

You'll fit right in here. Some of the people in here are useless. In fact, some of them persist with a tatty old grey called Rooster Booster, who last won a race in 1996 I think.

No. I backed him. Twenty quid on the nose. The fact that when I rang Corals, I meant to say Rhinestone Cowboy, but the tongue slipped is irrelevant. I called back the next minute and tried to change the bet to the O'Neill horse, but they wouldn't let me.

    @ jinnyj

We live in Hamburg but know Erika well. We have a horse in training with her, but she hardly drinks beer My friend was her secretary for some time, but our involvement with Erika started only in the mid-ninties.

beer: I know what you mean - should start your methid with my friend ...

No - An - but my b'f got the weight off (About 4st) in under 2 months just by running with a black bin liner under his jogging suit & it seems to have stayed off - but then I do work him hard - my methods are probably a little too risque for family reading tho'!

I'm reliably informed that what jinny is talking about is regular 5 mile runs (or the equivalent). B)

Have just returned from 5 mile hike with 3 greyhounds - & people do this for pleasure? Actually my curiosity had got the better of me as I wanted to have a look around Alan Jarvis' old gallops. Completely wasted - 2 all-weather gallops, one about 1m2f long abandoned to the elements. The grass gallops were over my knees. Even his starting stalls are still there. Such a shame.

We seem to have another new member with AliGupter, to whom I'd like to say a big welcome, if he/she looks in from time to time. Haven't heard from Spoons in a while, so let's hope that our RP-inspired members stay the distance.
