Bonfire, the Dante winner, and second favourite for the Derby, is out of a mare called Night Frolic. Those of you who were members of Talking Horses back in the Jurassic days may remember that a couple of us who were regulars on Talking Horses were two of a small group of owners of Night Frolic.

We had her only for her racing career. We had the opportunity to lease one of two 2-y-o fillies from the Duke of Roxburghe to race at two and three. They were with John Hills to be broken. John and his assistant trainer both chose the one we later named Night Frolic without knowing which the other had chosen.

They rejected the other filly because she walked strangely and ran even more so, crossing her front legs from side to side as she galloped. She went back to race under the Duke's ownership.

Night Frolic had two races at two without success. She had nine races at three, winning one - on heavy ground at 14/1. We weren't on as she hated the ground (said JH).

The one that was rejected, by the way ran five times as a 2-y-o, winning all five. As a 4-y-o she had had seven races, all Group 1. She won four - the 1,000 Guineas, the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes sand the Sun Chariot Stakes. She was also beaten half a length by Soviet Song in Leopardstown's Matron Stakes.

Her name was Attraction.

Danedream will run on Sunday in a g2 over 2200. If I am not mistaken, prizemoney for this race was 272.000 in 2001. This year's renewal has a prizemoney of 70.000.

2:50 Diverting was a handicap success story last season and I think he's a fairly safe bet, (if there is such a thing), to make the frame tomorrow: Certainly has to be considered. I am a bit worried about the horses who have been running at various trips, (they include Fork Handles, Making Eyes and Certral), as I think one or more of these could be being readied for a handicap in the near future. But Diverting is the one on the form based on the trip here.

3:25 It would be better if I finish football in time to watch it but Rodrigo De Torres is a solid bet all the same. In form of its life with two nice runs at Kempton and Thirsk (the latter on the Soft). And the form of its last race looks very good, coming second to an establshed handicapper from Richard Fahey's yard, with the third horse Smarty Socks clearly being very useful on his day aswell, (winning and placed in big handicaps last year).

I think Rodrigo is due to run well in a big handicap and will give supporters a good run for their money tomorrow: He'll most likely be up with the pace which is what you want here. That could be the key and indicate the gradule improvement in form shown: That he's now being ridden up with the pace - He could continue to improve based on this fact. 20/1 is a good price.

Best of luck if you're planning to have a bet tomorrow, you'll need it if you back against these two beauties:)

If you had a well-bred, unraced 4yo gelding, bred to stay and act in soft, what programme would you plan for it?

I'd think about bumpers or maidens for a bit of experience and take it from there (but I've never owned any more of a horse than what you'll find in a tube of UHU). If it was really good, prepare it for a valuable handicap, say the Ebor or something like that?

Calico Cat makes his racecourse debut in a reasonably prestigious race against horses with form in G1s. Why? It seems a tad ambitious and if it runs well what will the official handicapper do?

Anyway, it all intrigued me so I thought it was worth emptying what little I had in one account on the beast at 250/1 just in case my reverse logic proves to have some foundation.
