CHERRY MIX JOINS GODOLPHIN
Cherry Mix, the half-length second to Bago in the Group One Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, France, on Sunday, October 3, has been purchased by Godolphin.
The three-year-old had won his previous two races, the Group Two Grand Prix de Deauville on August 29 and the Listed Prix Frederic de Lagrange at Vichy on July 24.
Cherry Mix will winter in Dubai, with a provisional target being the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic on March 26, 2005.

Look at poor Sulamani . Had he stayed with Bary I bet he would have had a more successful career . Have they not got enough horses ?

I disagree with you.
Even more thinking in Daylami, Sakhee, Marienbard,Fantastic Light,Doyen,Halling.......

Maybe retirement would have beckoned otherwise for a lot of horses that Godolphin took on to 4 and 5.

Maybe not.
For sure.

Yes, poor, poor Sulamani, an absolutely disastrous purchase by Godolphin. I'm sure if he was still with Pascal Bary he would have won a lot more than just a Sheema Classic, an Arlington Million, a Turf Classic and a Juddmonte International, plus two successive placings in the King George.
Might as well send him to the sausage factory now as there's clearly no hope for the poor beast.

Had he stayed with Bary I reckon he would probably have won an Arc by now - come on who seriously rates the horse more highly than when he was such an unlucky second in the Arc? Forcing him so that he was ready for the maktoum family raceday was a disaster

Had he stayed with Bary he would have been retired at 3.

So if he had been retired at three with just a French Derby and an "unlucky" second in the Arc under his belt he would be much more highly rated than a horse that retires two years later having won multiple worldwide Group/Grade One races? I don't understand the logic there. Under the Godolphin banner he has proven his durability, adaptability and advertised him as a potential stallion to a worldwide audience.
BTW, he's not being retired.

To be honest Ardross i'd sooner have what he has now than say two GP De Saint Cloud's and an Arc.

The horse has been beaten regularly and his 4 yo career was F ****d up by the Sheema Classic - I think of him as a debased currency

Not going along with the 'poor Cherry Mix' idea but Sulamani is worth considerably less now than when he finished second in the Arc. With Stallions the number of starts to get your wins do matter. Look at the fees of Medalgio D'Oro and Smarty Jones for an example. It's quite obvious MDO is better but will stand for far less. With mares it seems to make little difference how many defeats they had but not with stallions.

Well, it ought not to matter!
It didn't used to in America, but they seem to have caught the disease in recent years.

If I was a thoroughbred and was bought by Godolphin I wouldn't understand any human who referred to it as "sad news" - I'd think that they were just expressing some form of personal bias. Given that the owners had to dispose of bloodstock interests to pay an inheritance tax bill of around £7m, there are far worse hands in which Cherry Mix and the others could have found themselves.

If the horse would have been trained by Suroor as a 3yo he would have been ridden by Dettori in that Arc and would have won it because Thulliez was the responsible of the race lost.
