Dartnall gives update on stable stars
by Tom Peacock, PA Sport
VICTOR DARTNALL is considering the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on October 30 for the reappearance of his stable star Lord Sam.
The eight-year-old was unbeaten over fences last term and had been a leading contender for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before being withdrawn due to a blood problem.
"He is fine, he has been in work for some time," said Dartnall on Thursday. "The first likely opportunity for him would be the Charlie Hall at Wetherby, dependent on the ground.
"He is progressing nicely, and his first big target remains the King George."
The Devon handler also had news on his useful bumper performer Mount Clerigo, who is set to go hurdling this season.
A winner of his first two starts, the gelding suffered his only defeat to date when finishing runner-up to Hughie Morrison's classy Secret Ploy in a valuable contest at Newbury in February.
"He is not quite as forward as Lord Sam, and probably won't run until the end of November," Dartnall added.
"I am looking at two-and-a-half-mile novice hurdles, there is one at Aintree which is a possibility, but we will have to see how he does in the next few weeks."
