I found to my cost last year that Willie John Daly is a very slow horse, stamina in abundance, but very very slow. By the years end, I'm sure there will be a sizeable gap in the ratings between himself and anything that is in this race, but this is first time out over fences at the start of what will probably be a busy year for him. If he takes well to fences I can imagine him being switched to open long distance handicaps fairly swiftly, and doing well in them.
This time round I'm sure there will be a temptation to keep the foot off the throttle for most of the race, and I wouldn't fancy him to be able to boot away from even these horses in the last half mile. Any mistakes are likely to prove costly, as it will take him an age to rebuild momentum.
At odds on I think he is well worth opposing today.
